DESCRIPTION

The Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health within the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego aims to eliminate the burdens of infectious diseases and health disparities by delivering outstanding patient care, conducting world-class multidisciplinary health research, directing the institutional response to antimicrobial resistance, preventable healthcare associated infections, and emerging pathogens, and offering leadership, consultation and training on global public health, gender equity, microbiology, and infectious diseases topics.

Under the supervision of Principal Investigators and a Research Program Manager, the incumbent will operationalize the daily operations of the research protocol of a mixed-method scientific research study within the fields of public health and epidemiology, focusing on HIV, assault, substance use, and mental health among vulnerable populations.

The Project Coordinator position will require a combination of tasks including project coordination and execution of mixed-methods research, study field work, data management, data analysis, and providing assistance with contributions to grant writing and scholarly papers for publication. Project coordination responsibilities include: assisting in creating and maintaining documentation for the Institutional Review Board; maintaining human subjects’ protocol; confirming proper training of research staff; scheduling team meetings and appointments; assisting in creating study materials; maintaining study files; securing confidential data; ensuring maintenance of standard operating procedures; and prioritizing and monitoring project timelines and tasks.

Study field work responsibilities include: overseeing recruitment of study participants; screening participants into studies; completing interviewer-administered surveys; and maintaining participant files. Data management responsibilities include: database management, storing and transferring qualitative data; and ensuring quality control and accuracy of audio files/qualitative transcripts. Scholarly responsibilities include: contributing to writing methods and results sections of scholarly papers; and providing contributions to grant writing.

Incumbent will be working within an interdisciplinary team and with high-risk, vulnerable populations (e.g., people living with HIV/AIDS, women who have been sexually assaulted, women in current abusive relationships, women who have substance use and/or mental health problems, etc.). Providing an open and non-judgmental environment in all settings and for study participants is vital for the purpose of the research projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of Health Sciences, Public Health, Social/Behavioral Sciences or related field, as typically attained by a Bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Proven experience overseeing/managing research, projects, and/or programs, ideally targeting trauma, interpersonal violence, mental health, sexual assault, and HIV.

  • Must be willing to interact and work with high-risk, marginalized, vulnerable populations (e.g., people living with HIV/AIDS, women who have been sexually assaulted, women in current abusive relationships, women who have substance use and/or mental health conditions, etc.).

  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of people, including faculty investigators, staff and students, locally, nationally and internationally. Must demonstrate professionalism when communicating with participants and research staff.

  • Experience working with marginalized populations (e.g., people living with HIV/AIDS, women who have been sexually assaulted, women in current abusive relationships, women who have substance use and/or mental health conditions, etc.).

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.); EndNote or other reference manager software; statistical software (e.g. SPSS; SAS; STATA).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Institutional Review Board and other federal research policies and procedures. Ability to maintain ethical human subjects’ protocols.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English (e.g., disseminating scientific findings, leading team meetings, writing standard operating procedures).

  • Thorough knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods and analysis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology or related field.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Occasional work during evenings and weekends required.
  • Training in the responsible conduct of human subjects’ research will be a requirement for working on this study.
  • Must be willing to conduct interviews on sensitive topics such as physical and/or sexual abuse and sexual assault.
  • May involve occasional travel to scientific meetings within California and out of state.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation for off-site travel and willing to travel within San Diego.
