Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced systems infrastructure professional with a full understanding of industry best practices and UCSD and department computing policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues that are moderately complex in scope for academic departments and organized research units in the Jacobs School of Engineering and elsewhere on campus.

Responsible for all aspects of the management of Unix servers and services for production and research computing for OEC customers in academic departments and organized research units in the Jacobs School of Engineering and elsewhere on campus. The duties of this position are to analyze, specify, design, and implement operating system and application software solutions in a medium-sized, heterogeneous computing environment made up of standalone, virtualized, and clustered Unix systems, principally on the server side. Systems consist of several Unix/Linux variants, including CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian, and Red Hat. The incumbent will collaborate significantly with the members of the OEC Infrastructure team, providing Tier III break/fix support, as well as directly and indirectly assisting in the resolution of Tier II and Tier I desktop system issues. The incumbent will also participate actively in strategic planning discussions regarding future state of our infrastructure.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. 5 or more years of Unix system administration experience in a medium-sized or larger production environment preferred. A proportionally higher level of demonstrated work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree and/or formal post secondary education.

  • General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.

  • Significant demonstrated experience in and in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the administration of multiple Unix server variants.

  • Experience in installation, configuration, evaluation, management and maintenance of all operational components, including open source and commercial applications and monitoring tools employed in a Unix environment.

  • Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.

  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.

  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner. Ability to as an internal consultant providing technical advice, work direction, guidance, and training of other unit personnel.

  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

  • Basic knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.

  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.

  • Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.

  • Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.

  • General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.

  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software.

  • Demonstrated experience with and thorough understanding of hardware platforms used in support of production and research computing environments, including requirements to support large-scale compute clusters and other scientific systems.

  • Demonstrated experience with the integration of Unix systems with various other platforms, including MacOS and Windows, specifically in terms of authentication/authorization systems and services (e.g., Active Directory, LDAP), and common storage services. Thorough knowledge of MacOS in the context of its underlying Unix-based functionality and operation.

  • Demonstrated experience in the planning, configuration, deployment, management, and troubleshooting of software and hardware networking components as they relate to Unix systems and services.

  • Demonstrated experience in the development, modification, maintenance, and debugging of scripts and programs used in the automation of various system management tasks.

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in the application of all aspects of Unix system security.

  • Experience in a common programming language and familiarity with basic programming concepts. Example languages include C, C++, and Java.

  • Significant hands-on experience in upgrade procedures and patch management for multiple Unix/Linux operating systems and application software running on these environments.

  • Understanding of the purpose and structure of the various logging mechanisms, files, and file formats typically used in mainstream Unix systems. Ability to manipulate and process the contents of these log files using standard Unix command line tools.

  • Ability to write and explain purchase justifications on technical grounds. Ability to act as vendor liaison in the specification, purchase, delivery, and maintenance of hardware and software systems.

  • Evidence of strong time management and organizational skills; ability to multi-task in the face of significant time constraints, and possibly rapidly shifting, contradictory demands and priorities.


  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends from time to time as job responsibilities require.

  • The scheduling of vacation time may be contingent upon meeting the coverage needs in this and other OEC functional units
