DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 486+ full-time salaried faculty members and 100+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 600+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are 250 clinical faculty practicing at multiple sites and hospitals.

The Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health (ID+GPH) within the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego aims to eliminate the burdens of infectious diseases and health disparities by delivering outstanding patient care, conducting world-class multidisciplinary health research, directing the institutional response to antimicrobial resistance, preventable healthcare associated infections, and emerging pathogens, and offering leadership, consultation and training on global public health, gender equity, microbiology, and infectious diseases topics.

Data Analysis Supervisor II will supervise statisticians, software developers and database managers and act as liaison between technical staff and researchers. Incumbent will also manage projects and priorities, and will allocate technical resources to ensure completion of projects.

Data Analysis Supervisor II will provide statistical, bioinformatics, and data-management support for a multiple-investigator human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-clinical and -translational research program. Incumbent is responsible for application of a broad range of statistical data analysis methods, including generalized linear and additive models, mixed effects models and other multivariate methods, network analysis techniques, Bayesian methods, power and sample size calculation, statistical methods for genomics and sequence analysis.

Major responsibilities will include statistical, quantitative and data analysis support for grant proposals and manuscript preparation; data analyses and automating report generation utilizing a centralized biomedical data management system with specific responsibilities for biostatistical/data management and research progress reporting needs of an HIV program project.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eleven (11) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Master’s degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training.

  • Thorough knowledge of biostatistical methods.

  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge associated with monitoring staffing levels, recruitment and training procedures.

  • Knowledge and skills relating to database management and statistical software programming.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Advanced skills associated with statistical analysis, database management and systems programming.

  • Advanced skills in analysis and consultation. Advanced knowledge of statistical methods and significant methodological innovation.

  • Proven ability to read complex scientific literature, understand appropriate study design, formulate appropriate statistical hypotheses, and propose appropriate statistical methods.

  • Experience with moderately complex statistical programming and use of statistical computer packages, including SAS and R.

  • Advanced project management skills. Ability to lead and influence within and external to project team. Ability to work with Principal Investigators to establish project procedures, interpret results of advanced analyses and make recommendations regarding alternative approaches to develop research plans.

  • In-depth knowledge of research function. Knowledge of statistical theory and the ability to develop new methodology to meet novel requirements, such as statistical models in new areas of application and derivation of inference procedures using maximum likelihood, Bayesian or other principles; and specification of usage of new statistical methods with appropriate attention to tests assumptions, numerical accuracy and correct interpretation of results.

  • Advanced ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of people from faculty investigators to support staff throughout the institution. Ability to co-author effective and comprehensive proposals, presentations and articles.

  • Advanced ability to think creatively to recommend action steps or strategize solutions relative to research. Ability to assist principal investigators in planning research designs on complicated problems or large-scale studies resulting in contracts or grants.

  • Knowledge to provide written interpretation of statistical methods and results, in a manner suitable for publication.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD in mathematics, statistics or a related field and at least ten (10) years of professional statistical experience.
