Under the direction of the Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) attending physician and APP Supervisor, and in addition to performing operational-level assignments, the outpatient Physician Assistant is consistently assigned the more complex cases which require the use of advanced Physician Assistant operational skills and theory to oncology patient population. Provides primary medical management for oncology/BMT patients. Leads by example demonstrating professional image and leadership core competencies. Acts as a liaison within the BMT Program to promote consistent medical management of the patients across the health care continuum by collaborating with the multidisciplinary care team.
Performs specialized procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture and skin biopsy. Presents patient cases during daily rounds and at the weekly BMT Clinical meetings. Provides patient/family and staff education. Participates in and/or initiates research. Participates in community outreach and networking with community physicians and other health care professionals. May provide care to BMT patients in the outpatient setting at Moores Cancer Center. Develops and expands role responsibilities as patient and system needs change.
Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the PA or Sr. PA level.
Must be a graduate from an accredited physician assistant program.
Current State of California Physician Assistant (PA) license.
Current Physician Assistant Certification from NCCPA.
DEA Registration Certificate. Must have successfully completed or commit to complete within six (6) months of hire the Controlled Substance Education Course by the California Academy of Physician Assistants.
BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.
Minimum six (6) months of licensed PA experience in Oncology and/or BMT. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.
Knowledge of BMT process and hematological blood cancers, including knowledge of pathology of patient population, expected outcomes, normal and abnormal lab results. Knowledge of administration of chemotherapy and other common blood & marrow transplant medications.
Proven experience performing initial history and physical examination; identifying major medical problems, and formulating appropriate plans of action.
Experience performing diagnostic tests, exams, procedures used in adult medicine. Knowledge of the purpose of these tests and infection control mechanisms.
Experience providing patient education and counseling and developing and implementing long- and short-range treatment plans. Comfortable in a group teaching setting.
Ability to interact effectively with diverse population, including professional and non-professional staff. High level of professionalism and excellent communication skills.
Strong computer skills and knowledge of PCIS/Epic for retrieval of patient data (computer skills required; PCIS/Epic preferred).
Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.
Ability to understand the medical as well as psych-social needs of a patient population with cancer.
Ability to function as part of an interdisciplinary team. Excellent leadership skills with ability to motivate team members.
- BMT/Hematology/Oncology experience.
- Experience with related procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture and skin biopsy.
- Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
- Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.
