Depending on the experience of the selected candidate, this position will be filled at either the Research Compliance Analyst 1 or Research Compliance Analyst 2 level.

DESCRIPTION

The Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) is responsible for the oversight, administration, implementation, and compliance management of policies and procedures related to human subject research conducted by UCSD investigators. The HRPP supports six federally mandated human subject research review committees: five Biomedical Institutional Review Boards, and one social and behavioral sciences Institutional Review Board.

This position serves as an entry-level HRPP analyst providing analytical and administrative support for various Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) in a high-volume, detail-oriented environment. Serve as a resource for clinical trials, investigator-initiated studies, and grant-supported research escalating to supervisor and senior analysts as needed. Primarily via written correspondence composed in a high-volume, short time-line environment, advises faculty and research staff of IRB and collaborating review determinations and actions. Serves as contact (email and ServiceNow) for faculty, staff, students, human subjects, and other individuals regarding the protection of human subjects in research compliance guided by federal, university, and other regulatory agencies regarding the research involving human subjects. Conducts pre-review of research protocols from all research areas, including the School of Medicine and general campus, in terms of research compliance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • To be considered at the Research Compliance Analyst 2 level: six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training.

  • Human subjects, and animal care and use: academic training in the biological or social sciences, humanities or bioethics. Proven related experiences, knowledge and ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations and legislation regarding the protection of human subjects.

  • Strong attention to detail. Ability to keep and maintain records in a neat and orderly fashion, and perform administrative duties with a high level of proficiency and competency.

  • Ability to read and comprehend complex materials. Ability to interpret and disseminate information on a wide variety of complex policies from various organizations.

  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills (clarity, sentence/paragraph construction and grammar, et cetera). Ability to exercise judgment, tact, and firmness in interaction with faculty, students, staff and IRB members, subjects and others. Ability to communicate in a professional, positive, and persuasive manner.

  • Demonstrated ability and desire to learn; curiosity around the research activities in which they are involved.

  • Skills in problem solving, multi-tasking, working with frequent interruptions, and is an effective listener. Excellent organizational skills in order to prioritize multiple tasks, develop, analyze and/or revise procedures, meet deadlines, and work in an environment of heavy pressures and changing priorities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Related experiences, knowledge and ability to interpret and apply regulations under local HRPP, VCHS and UC-wide policies and procedures.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Rare to Occasional attendance needed at IRB meeting which occur after normal working hours (currently scheduled on Thursdays at 5 pm and last 2-3 hours).
  • Occasional travel (usually once biannually).
