This position participates in the management of the State of California Prenatal Screening Program, a state-wide prenatal birth defects screening program funded by the California Department of Public Health, Genetic Disease Screening Program.
The responsibilities of this position will include: 1) share in the management of the California Prenatal Screening Program for San Diego, Riverside and Imperial Counties, 2) assist in data collection and research, 3) educate providers in San Diego, Riverside and Imperial Counties and 4) other duties as assigned.
Will participate in the formulation of long-range goals and objectives, reviewing and analyzing alternative means for implementing operational changes consistent with state agency (Genetic Disease branch) requirements and UC San Diego policy.
Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training; OR a Bachelor’s Degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training.
Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of public health administration and /or health education.
Ability to apply clinical judgement and management concepts to the day to day operations of the program.
Advanced communication skills with broad range of research partners and project team members. Ability to communicate in a clear and understandable way by phone with prenatal care providers and their staff, laboratory personnel, Genetic Disease Screening Program staff and patients.
Knowledge of or willingness to acquire knowledge of current prenatal screening tests including AFP, HCG, uE3, inhibin and future prenatal screening tests.
Advanced research and analytical skills. Ability to enter patient data and clinical information critical to the interpretation of test results into the computer accurately and in a timely manner.
Demonstrated general knowledge of genetics and birth defects.
Advanced ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.
Strong ability to lead research activities and project team independently, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Acute attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Ability to appreciate heterogeneity, variability and natural history of medical disorders which are screened for by the Prenatal Screening test.
Demonstrated experience in at least one specialty field relating to genetics, maternal-child health or public health.
Proven knowledge of chromosomal anomalies and neural tube defects and associated clinical features. Knowledge of current developments in the field of genetics. Knowledge of the modes of inheritance of the defects involved.
Knowledge of, or willingness to acquire knowledge of, available health care resources for appropriate referrals.
Ability to elicit and interpret individual and family histories.
- Master's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Registered Nurse with obstetrical, maternal child health, or public health experience with at least a bachelor's degree.
- Board certified or board eligible Genetic Counselor, or have a health related Master's degree and five years of experience with prenatal, MCH, public health or genetic services.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Some flexibility in work days is required.
Must comply with the terms and requirements of the Genetics Disease Screening Program Contract: A registered nurse with obstetrical, maternal child health, or public health experience with at least a bachelor's degree and preferably a master's degree or a Board certified or board eligible Genetic Counselor, or a person with a health related master's degree and five years of experience with prenatal, MCH, public health or genetic services.
