This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite in Mission Valley and remote.
The Health Human Resources Workers’ Compensation & Disability Management Unit supports the UC San Diego Health System by assisting departments identifying their risk exposures, recommending strategies to reduce or eliminate identified risks, and by administering the insurance programs to facilitate maximum recovery resulted from occupational injuries/illnesses. Under the direction of the Disability Management and Workers' Compensation Manager, the Workers’ Compensation Case Manager is independently responsible for the administration and management of incident reporting, complex claim administration, and benefits coordination in accordance with federal and state law as well as organization policies and guidelines.The position gathers, analyzes, prepares, and summarizes areas of potential loss; reviews work restrictions; and facilitates/leads interactive discussions between supervisors and injured employees regarding potential claim processing, reasonable accommodation, and benefit eligibility.
The position also designs, develops and presents training presentations to clients, and assists in program administration by analyzing complex risk metrics to assist with program enhancements.
Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.
Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of California workers' compensation claims management; workers’ compensation experience with either a third-party claims administrator, a workers’ compensation insurer or a large employer.
Working knowledge of medical terminology and medical reports and their respective implications for claim handling and reasonable accommodation. Ability to maintain highly confidential information in an appropriate manner while ensuring high ethical standards.
Thorough knowledge of occupational disability management; California State Labor Code - including Section 132A Cal-OSHA recordable and reportable injuries; experience in developing and coordinating occupational injury return to work through the interactive process.
Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Amendments, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and the California Fair Employment & Housing Act.
Proven customer service orientation, active listening skills, and organizational skills while balancing significant caseloads.
Proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and use critical thinking and analytical skills to solve problems. Including the ability to clearly explain federal and state laws/regulations, University policies and procedures, and collective bargaining agreements language.
Demonstrated working knowledge of MS Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Completion of Insurance Educational Association course WCCA 10, Foundations of California Workers’ Compensation Claims, or equivalent California Workers’ Compensation certificate program.
- Certified Professional in Disability Management.
- Related experience in a large healthcare organization or similarly complex organization.
- Employment is subject to both a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
