The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science is dedicated to creating and promoting public health innovations to advance equity, justice, and wellbeing for all and has more than 80 primary salaried faculty, 20 secondary faculty, 250+ personnel, 225 postgraduate students, and over 650 undergraduate majors. The School includes activities in the public health disciplines of biostatistics and bioinformatics, epidemiology, global health, health policy, health behavior, health equity, public mental health, environmental and climate health, and preventive medicine.

The School has strong collaborative research programs facilitated by Research Centers of Excellence focused on wireless and population health systems, health promotion and equity, women's health, and tobacco control, and has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Jacobs School of Engineering, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Moores Cancer Center, Design Lab, Qualcomm Institute, ACTRI, HDSI, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School. The School houses five recharge cores providing services to UC San Diego and external customers. Research in the School includes ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts. The School has and administers two PhD programs (public health and biostatistics), a Master of Public Health professional degree program, a MS in Biostatistics, the only Health Sciences undergraduate program (BSPH), a Master of Applied Science in Leadership of Healthcare Organizations run in conjunction with UC San Diego Extension, and a Preventive Medicine Residency program.

The UCSD Relink Health Coach will deliver the UCSD PROS Soft Skills Curriculum to individuals whose lives have been impacted by or at risk of contact with the criminal justice system. Specifically, clients for this program include persons ages 18+ who have a history of incarceration, probation, or parole. Immediate family members of eligible persons (i.e., spouse/partner, child age 18+) will also be eligible to receive support from the UCSD PROS Skills Coach.

In addition to providing client-facing services, the Skills Coach will report to the Program Director and Clinical Supervisors, participate in intake and other data collection, and weekly team-meetings to ensure program fidelity. Skills Coaches are expected to have expertise in CBT, narrative and multi-systemic therapies, de-escalation techniques, motivational interviewing, goal setting, mandatory reporting, mental health first aid, identification of suicidal and homicidal ideation, and principles of team-based care while also serving as mentors and role models to clients who are seeking to improve their soft skills and reduce the possibility of violence in the community.


  • Master's Degree in Social Work.

  • Knowledge of community-based mental health and social services.

  • Proven ability to form constructive working relationships with medically and mentally ill patients.

  • Good writing ability.

  • Strong interpersonal skill with clients and co-workers. Excellent communication skills.

  • Knowledge and skill in problem-focused psychotherapeutic approaches.

  • Working knowledge of DSM-IV categories and differential diagnosis.

  • Proven ability in provide a range of psychotherapeutic services including individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy.

  • Demonstrated ability to use electronic medical record.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of violence prevention techniques

  • Prior work history with adults impacted by the criminal justice system (e.g., on probation, parole, formerly incarcerated).

  • Prior work history with adults impacted by violence, including gang members.


  • Ability to plan and conduct treatment interventions for psychiatric illness.
  • Ability to conduct psychiatric and functional assessments and formulate DSM-IV diagnoses.
  • Intern license preferred.
  • Prior experience providing tele-health services is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Southeast San Diego


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • TB and immunization clearance required.

Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $65,459 - $86,193 Annually

The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).

If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
