This is a 75% Limited position for 3 months. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department.

DESCRIPTION
UC San Diego TRIO Outreach ProgramsUpward Bound, Upward Bound Math-Science and Talent Search programs serve over 800 students during the academic year and the summer. During June and July, UC San Diego’s TRIO Outreach Programs offers 5 distinct academic programs to over 175 9th - 12th-grade students from low-income, first-generation backgrounds.
Under close supervision of higher-level staff, uses K-14 academic preparation professional concepts and practices by working with assigned sites to implement academic preparation programs.
TRIO is seeking motivated and enthusiastic staff who can act as program chaperones, mentors, and tutors in academic summer courses. Due to the fast-paced nature of the summer program, and the extensive federal requirements and objectives of our summer academic courses, tutors play a vital role in ensuring we are keeping the high school students motivated and engaged. Tutors are assigned to work with a specific academic program, please see below for dates, times, and location.
Tutors are required to monitor and supervise approximately 15 - 30 high school students during English, College Seminar, Foreign Language, Math, and Science courses. Proficiency in high school level math (Integrated Math 3, Pre-Calculus and Calculus) and science (Biology, Physics, and Chemistry) is a priority consideration in our hiring selection process. Tutors are expected to actively participate in class and assist instructors with lessons. Tutors will meet weekly with instructors for feedback and skills-building lessons. Tutors may be asked to lead large group lectures or facilitate small group discussions. All tutors will be expected to represent UCSD therefore professionalism and cross-cultural competency are essential when communicating with students, parents, teachers, and program staff.
Tutors must be reliable and arrive on time to all assigned hours. Tutors must be comfortable with enforcing rules with minors, addressing behavior concerns with students, and leading student activities. Tutors will report back daily on student attendance, behavior issues, and academic progress on struggling students. Tutors assigned to work at UCSD will participate in the Summer Food Services Program and will monitor participants during lunch. Tutors must have strong oral communication skills. Tutors are responsible for frequent communication with supervisors, especially as it pertains to their role in monitoring students’ progress.
Additional Extension of Tutor Job for Summer:
July 31st through September 15th. During this time, tutors will work a modified schedule with approximately 20 hours allocated per week. Only Tutors who can drive to school sites will be offered extended hours past July 28th, after our summer programs end.

PROGRAM 2 - UBC 2 & UBMS 1 & UBMS 2 (Central SD) - 4 openings
June 26th - July 7th (No classes July 4th)
Monday - Friday 8:00am - 2:00pm
Location: SD City College
July 17th - July 28th
Monday - Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm
Location: UCSD Campus
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with classroom tutoring, group tutoring or individual tutoring with high school l level courses. Experience with keeping students on task and supervising minors in an academic setting.
Knowledge working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.
Proven ability to understand and implement various instructional methods and strategies for increasing students’ academic skills. Ability to assist students with problem solving, finding solutions and approaching their academic work.
Ability to lead and supervise a group of people and facilitate group discussions. Ability to communicate effectively in one-one and group settings.
Knowledge of academic programs, including curricula and admissions requirements at higher education institutions.
Knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements.
Knowledge of higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), and the ability to explain procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives.
Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.
Knowledge and understanding of K-14 education.
Proven experience working cooperatively as part of a team. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
The tutors will abide by and enforce all University, Residence Life and TRIO policies and the UCSD/TRIO Code of Conduct and Principles of Community.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Background Check required.
Must sign the CANRA form as a California Mandated Reporter.
Must have own reliable transportation to and from the assigned work location.
All students, staff, and faculty must be vaccinated for COVID-19, or have an approved exemption or deferral, per the University of California mandate.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $32,100 - $69,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $15.37 - $33.19
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
