DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, this position is responsible for a broad range of programmatic support in the administration and delivery of programs designed to increase the retention and graduate school admission rates for a target population falling under the service umbrella of the TRIO Student Support Services Programs. This includes providing support in the design, delivery, advising, counseling, and administration functions related to skill development and academic support services for the TRIO SSSP participants through workshops, seminars, and tutoring.

The TRIO SSSP Program Assistant works with a student and staff team to coordinate, communicate, and staff the various workshops, seminars, and events that are offered throughout the academic year. Assists in developing/preparing materials for trainings, meetings, events, workshops and outreach projects. Perform outreach activities to include presenting program information as requested by the colleges, community and other campus partners.

Additionally, this position provides support in the planning, developing and delivery of programs and presentations for campus partners and the community. Serve as a resource and contact for TRIO SSSP building supportive and productive relationships with students and facilitating students' connection to the appropriate resources on campus (academic advising, counseling, financial aid, study management, tutoring, etc.) which support them in enhancing academic success.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from college with major work in Sociology, Education, Ethnic Studies or related field, with experience working in a college level student support services environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.

  • Knowledge of personal growth and development areas, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership. Verified skill in the development, implementation and evaluation of educational, cultural, and social programs in a higher education environment that reflect the needs of a diverse student population.

  • Knowledge of theories and principles of higher education and student development with ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.

  • Proven skill using effective pedagogical strategies for designing, planning, and implementing academic support programs for underrepresented, multicultural and other non-traditional college students.

  • Demonstrated presentation skills to deliver workshops and teach concepts to various audiences.

  • Solid analytical skills for identifying areas for improvement and developing innovative solutions. Ability to recognize problems, conflicts or impact to others, research options, present alternatives, implement solutions and follow through to ensure goals are met.

  • Ability to keep accurate records, compile and analyze data for program effectiveness and assessment. Prepare summary and or statistical reports and instructional materials with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services. Familiarity with DOE Federal TRIO Programs and the goals of the Student Support Services program.

  • Verified skills to develop, implement and evaluate educational, cultural, and social programs in a higher education environment that reflect the needs of a diverse student population.

  • Excellent collaboration skills to effectively work with cross-sectional teams on campus in order to develop and deliver services.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated experience in using administrative software packages and tools including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) Outlook, Adobe, internet browsers and databases.
