Under general supervision, participate with project engineers, scientists and technicians in the preparation, maintenance, fabrication, testing, debugging, and shipping of electronic and mechanical instrumentation systems in support of ocean acoustic research.

This position will assist technical staff, and liaise with staff researchers, in the design, modification, and upkeep of technical documents, fixtures, and hardware.

Work with 3rd party vendors, fabricators, and machine shops on engineering change orders while maintaining a healthy professional relationships, employing diplomacy, and demonstrating tact while meeting all functional and timeliness requirements based on tasking from senior staff.


  • B.S in Mechanical, Electrical, or Ocean Engineering and two (2) years in a professional engineering setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Familiarity with Design for Testing and Design for Manufacturing practices

  • Experience with the end-to-end design process of creating physical parts and hardware for test and use.

  • Independent, self-starter willing to design solutions, implement, and conduct tests to demonstrate their success or failure.

  • Ability to assist with the preparation, fabrication, testing, maintenance, and use of mechanical and electronic sea-going equipment.

  • Ability to use standard electronic and mechanical tools such as wire strippers, screwdrivers, oscilloscopes, voltmeters, soldering irons, wrenches, power drills, etc. Familiarity and experience working with and troubleshooting embedded devices, similar to Arduino, and their integration into mechanical-electrical systems. Good communication (written and verbal) skills.

  • Ability to set intermediate deadlines and self-report progress as required based on project deliverable and complexity.

  • Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely manner.

  • Technically minded and an ability to work safely with others to meet various deadlines.


  • Position is 100% on-site. Permit parking and street parking. Research Laboratory appropriate attire with closed-toe shoes as required by Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S).
  • Reference and Background checks are required.
