DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 486+ full-time salaried faculty members and 100+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 600+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are 250 clinical faculty practicing at multiple sites and hospitals.

The overall focus of the laboratory is to understand how epithelial stem cells coordinate tissue renewal with the ultimate goal to harness stem cell regenerative potential to develop new strategies for precise tissue repair. Stem Cell Research Assistant will apply core techniques in cell biology, microscopy, mouse genetics and biophysics to address fundamental questions in stem cell biology during normal development and cancer progression. Under supervision, incumbent will independently perform in vivo and in vitro assays, plan experiments, analyze data, and contribute to scientific papers. Expectations will be to independently perform experiments and manage a large and complex mouse colony, keep detailed records of all aspects of experimental data, participate in group meetings, independently perform general lab duties including ordering reagents as well as laboratory maintenance, ordering laboratory supplies and serving as primary contact for vendors.

Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the level 1 or level 2.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge in cell biology, molecular biology genetics, stem cell biology and developmental biology or equivalent combination of experience and education.

  • Experience in designing, performing and analyzing research projects and understands what it takes to keep an organized yet fast-paced lab functional.

  • Experience and knowledge with animal procedures, breeding, handling, anesthesia, injection, transplantation, and colony maintenance as well as the ability to learn in utero-lentivirus injections and intravital fluorescent imaging

  • Comfortable of handling and working with mice, primary human tissues and hazardous materials.

  • Expertise in molecular biology including RNA/DNA isolation, real-time PCR, viral production, plasmid design, cloning and preparation.

  • Experience with all aspects of tissue culture including freezing, thawing, counting cells and splitting cultures.

  • Demonstrated experience reading and using Material Safety Data Sheets. Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Experience with the use of general and special laboratory equipment such as ultracentrifuge, cryostat and microscopes.

  • Ability to keep accurate records of experimental procedures and results, to discuss them, and to prepare relevant oral and written presentations. Ability to present data in a clear and concise manner.

  • Strong computer skills and experience with the operation of all basic software applications such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel, and knowledge to work with a variety of statistical and analysis programs like Prism, and learn specialized imaging and analysis software (i.e Imaris).

  • Ability to proactively and appropriately facilitate the maintenance of lab supplies and equipment. Ability to assist with general lab maintenance, including cleaning and restocking supplies and managing a regular schedule in the lab. Manual dexterity and legible handwriting.

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Knowledge sufficient to coordinate studies with other departments and the lab. Skill to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with flow cytometry and cell sorting.
  • Experience with tissue clearing and confocal microscopy.
  • Experience with high throughput sequencing (bulk, single cell and ATACseq) and working with R and/or Python.
  • Experience with lentivirus preparation and virus concentration.
  • Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Willing to be flexible with work hours to include occasional evening or weekend work as required for animal care and experiments.
