DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Pharmacology is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers investigate the molecular basis of human diseases. The faculty are internationally renowned for their strength in elucidating basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of signal transduction that lead to innovative drug target identification and ultimately to drug discovery. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines, and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. More than one hundred trainees at the graduate student and postdoctoral level, as well as a staff of more than 50 research technicians and department administrators interact closely with the faculty. Under supervision and in collaboration with senior scientists the incumbent will assist in experimental research and data analysis of drug profiling and evaluation related to innate inflammatory response in vitro and in vivo. Will assist with primary mouse macrophage culture and mouse cell line culture and maintenance. Perform in vitro studies that will include several biochemistry and molecular biology techniques, including Eenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), DNA and mRNA isolation, Quantitative PCR, protein isolation and Western Blot, and Immunofluorescence. Assist with in vivo experiments relevant to acute and chronic inflammation. Will assist in general laboratory maintenance and organization. Assist supervisor and laboratory members with special experiments and various projects as necessary. Interact with faculty, postdoctoral scholars, students and research technician in a large laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry or biology.

  • Knowledge of and experience with basic laboratory procedures and equipment, including sterile techniques, preparation of buffers and media, cell culture, PCR, protein analysis and purification.

  • Knowledge of or experience maintaining and working with primary cells or cell lines on culture.

  • Husbandry experience and the ability work with mice.

  • Ability to follow research protocols and to understand and execute both written and verbal instructions and tasks on schedule.

  • Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety and ability to work carefully with potentially harmful agents.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Ability to communicate and report progress to superiors, asking questions and notification of problems.
