DESCRIPTION

The UCSD School of Medicine is one of the nation’s most prestigious medical schools and a preeminent institution for education, biomedical research, and clinical care. Incumbent will work as Staff Research Associate in the laboratory of Guillaume Urtecho, at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, which studies gastrointestinal diseases. The Urtecho laboratory is located in Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) at UCSD. The laboratory environment consists of over 3500 ft2 of contiguous space and includes new state of the art laboratory resources; benches, common equipment, tissue culture rooms, cold room, and procedure rooms. The open lab structure of ACTRI fosters constant scientific exchange among some of the most talented researchers.

We are seeking a highly motivated Staff Research Associate I to join our team and support laboratory and field research activities. This entry-level position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in scientific research within a dynamic academic environment.

Key Responsibilities:* Perform standard repetitive laboratory and/or field experimental procedures following supervised training.* Assist with data collection, analysis, and documentation of research findings.* Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring accurate and reliable results.* Help order supplies and manage inventory, ensuring the lab is well-stocked and organized.* Contribute to the organization and upkeep of the laboratory, including managing common areas and equipment.* Oversee that Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) standards are met, ensuring a safe working environment.* Participate in training sessions to learn and develop more advanced laboratory techniques.* Collaborate with senior researchers and contribute to the overall success of research projects.

Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of Cell and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, and give oral presentations on the progress of research.

  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program; safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, and use of protective items such as gloves and goggles.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or collaboratively on a research project. Ability to maintain a high level of motivation to contribute to cutting edge research, and seek and learn new experimental methods as required.

  • Demonstrated experience with basic laboratory equipment such as pipetting devices, centrifuges, electrophoresis equipment, balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, dishwashers, and autoclaves, which include experience in performing mathematical calculations including computing molarities, dilutions, etc. Skill, ability and willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and use of new lab equipment rapidly and as needed.

  • Experience and skill with MS Office programs, file-making, spreadsheet, and graphics software; willingness and ability to update and increase PC skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Enthusiasm for learning and genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles. Ability to take direction, be detail-oriented and follow step-wise instruction.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality in matters related to work.

  • Demonstrated successful, positive interpersonal oral and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Skill to interact effectively with faculty, academics, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of UC San Diego Health purchasing procedures.

  • Basic knowledge and experience of accounting, billing practices, purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Ability to proactively and appropriately facilitate the maintenance of all lab supplies and equipment, maintain steady levels of lab supplies, and organize purchasing records.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be willing to work with mice as an experimental model.

  • Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.

  • Must be willing to work with biohazardous material including bacteria and samples from mice and humans.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
