DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology and Shiley Eye Institute is a global leader in research investigation in ophthalmology and visual sciences. With the increasing quantity of clinical, imaging, and testing data available in the modern era of electronic health records and digital health, ophthalmology is poised for rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and "big-data" predictive analytics. Our department is growing its research programs in computational and data science to power innovations in this space. This includes analyses of existing data as well as conducting prospective clinical research studies.

Under the supervision of the PI and senior laboratory members, the position will participate in several genetic research projects to identify genes involved in cataract development. The incumbent will assist as part of a multidisciplinary team investigating molecular pathways leading to cataracts and other corneal diseases. Perform standard and routine DNA and RNA extractions, genotyping, sequencing, and mutation screening. Tissue culture of corneal and other ocular cells. Gene expression analysis including qPCR and preparation samples for RNA-Seq. Responsible for data compilation and summarization. Responsible for the maintenance of tissue, DNA, and other experimental samples. Maintaining research database and assist with general laboratory maintenance. Maintaining and breeding with small animals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of a life science as is typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree in a field related to the research being conducted such as biology, genetics, molecular biology or biochemistry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in general laboratory techniques and molecular techniques; biochemistry, molecular biology, basic genetics.

  • Knowledge and experience with basic and general techniques in molecular biology.

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and to work closely and collaboratively with others including the ability to follow written and oral instructions.

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare solutions at proper concentrations, operate analytical balances and perform accurate calculations.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and interact with patients.

  • Ability to read and interpret protocols and policies.

  • Experience in operating various lab instruments including balance and autoclave.

  • Experience with measuring, weighing, and mixing chemicals.

  • Experience with personal computers. Ability to use database and spreadsheet.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with calibration and maintenance of test equipment used in fluid/tissue analysis.

  • Familiarity with recruiting, screening, tracking and retaining subjects for research studies,

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,301 - $97,008 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $46.46

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
