The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 171 Faculty, 50 post-doctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 300 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 57 clinical residents and fellows distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education, and patient care are intertwined and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Department has undergone significant growth in recent years and the expansion of the Department’s research and clinical portfolio is expected to continue in the next few years.

Under supervision, the incumbent will independently perform molecular biology experiments and maintaining mouse colonies. Techniques include purifying DNA and RNA; preparing low-input RNA-seq and ATAC-seq samples (or other high throughput sequencing-based samples); prepare and quantify DNA libraries for sequencing, performing quantitative PCR; and assisting in preparing samples for FACS.Mouse work will include setting up breedings, PCR genotyping, setting up hyperoxia chamber experiments, mouse injection, dissection, and isolating mouse macrophages populations.General laboratory activities will include ordering, troubleshooting experimental design and equipment, attending lab meetings, and maintaining a safe work environment according to EH&S, state, and federal standards.

We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated, dedicated, and detail-oriented Research Associate. This position has dual functions in scientific research and lab management. The individual will work in a state-of-the-art laboratory focused on determining the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms controlling the development of the neonatal innate immune system.

Regarding scientific research, the incumbent will perform a variety of cellular and molecular assays and small animal experiments for different projects. The incumbent will process laboratory specimens for FACS, and use sorted cells to prepare RNAseq, ATACseq and ChIPseq libraries. The incumbent will analyze data and interpret results independently and in collaboration with others. In addition, the incumbent will present, and prepare for publication results under the direction of the PI. The research assistant is expected to make contributions pertaining to experimental methodology by reviewing published scientific data, as well as online information using search engines and subject-specific websites, to make recommended changes to current protocols and practices.

The laboratory management duties include demonstrating and training laboratory personnel in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment, calibrating, troubleshooting, and performing routine repair and maintenance of equipment, monitoring laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards, and monitoring the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances. The incumbent will train and/or provide guidance in the techniques, protocols, and procedures of laboratory and data management, including training in the techniques employed for small animal experiments. Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Theoretical knowledge of cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, or related field, as typically attained by a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience of laboratory work with a good understanding of all the components of successful operation of a molecular biology lab.

  • Practical background with demonstrated ability in mouse colony management, breeding with timed pregnancies genotyping, harvesting lung, brain, and retina, and minor animal procedures, such as IP injection and gavage techniques.

  • Proven ability in computer skills, including Office and Excel.

  • Demonstrated ability to take direction, be detail oriented and follow step-wise instruction.

  • Expertise in molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid manipulation, electrophoresis, tissue and cell culture, and PCR required.

  • Skills and knowledge in flow cytometry, especially fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS).

  • Proven ability to work with a large number of samples with accuracy and efficiency.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical procedures.

  • Ability to work independently and oversee others; demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in a deadline-driven environment; good communication and analytical skills.


  • Experience in high-throughput platforms is preferred, such as experience with library preparation for Illumina Next Generation sequencing, including RNA-seq and ATAC-seq. In addition, experience with quantifying libraries with accuracy using quantitative PCR and Qubit fluorometer.

  • Must be willing and able to work with small animals and biohazardous materials, including human tissues.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,548 - $94,190 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.04 - $45.11

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
