The Department of Medicine (DoM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine (SoM) and is responsible for fulfilling its teaching, research, and clinical missions. DoM employees approximately 500 salaried faculty, nearly 200 academic appointees, and more than 300 residents, fellows, and postdocs, supported by almost 1,000 staff members. While the position will be based in the DoM, the Principal Investigators of the study also have appointments in the UCSD Department of Psychiatry. Under supervision, the Staff Research Associate will be responsible for assisting with assessment and project coordination for studies examining cognitive ability among Hispanics/Latinos with and without cognitive impairment. Primary responsibilities include administering various assessments (e.g., scales for psychopathology, substance use, cognition, scales of acculturation); coordinating protocol implementation and modifications; ensuring protocol compliance; maintenance of accurate and complete clinical research files; close monitoring of assessments, interventions and on-going activities of the projects; and propose solutions and strategies to resolve any issues that might arise.
The incumbent will also assist with scheduling, recruitment, preparation of data for processing, data entry, data extraction, statistical analyses, and other research-related tasks. Data collection will be carried out both in the laboratory and in the field. Additional responsibilities include driving to participants’ home locations and affiliated sites, and securely transporting blood samples and other laboratory materials (e.g., study smartphone, Fitbit) back to the laboratory. A strong knowledge of how Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias affects functioning is desired. Finally, the incumbent will routinely attend research meetings and assist with meeting agendas and minutes. Perform other miscellaneous duties and responsibilities as required. Training in the responsible conduct of human research will be a requirement for working on this study.
While not required, applicants with a phlebotomy license are preferred. If the Staff Research Associate has a phlebotomy license, they will perform standard blood-drawing procedures such as the collection, storage and accurate labeling of study participants’ blood samples. Sample collection tasks will include drawing the participants’ blood, processing samples through centrifugation and pipetting, labeling each specimen correctly. Regardless of phlebotomy license status, the applicant will be responsible for safely transporting and storing blood samples. The applicant will follow standard infection control procedures and safety policies and take universal precautionary measures.
Must have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Proficiency in written and oral English and Spanish. Experience working with Hispanic/Latino individuals.
Theoretical knowledge of neuropsychology, aging, dementia, healthcare disparities, and/or related fields acquired through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent education and/or experience.
Demonstrated experience in a research setting.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a good working relationship with a wide variety of people, using tact, diplomacy, confidentiality and flexibility.
Ability to implement recruitment strategies of participants for research study and screen database to evaluate their eligibility for study participation.
Knowledge of and experience with electronic devices such as smartphones.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse study population and staff. Cultural competency working with diverse populations including Hispanics/Latinos.
Experience in interviewing; ability to recognize inadequate responses and collect reliable information in interviews; excellent observational skills.
Proficiency with word processing, graphics, statistical, and database programs.
Experience in administering and/or scoring neurobehavioral assessments and/or psychological tests.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).
- CPR/BLS Healthcare Provider (recognized by AHA or equivalent).
- Experience working with individuals with complex data including from mobile devices and sensors.
- Ability to conduct comprehensive literature reviews utilizing multiple sources of media.
- Knowledge of statistical concepts and ability to perform statistical analyses.
- Experience working with data related to aging populations.
- Phlebotomy training, certification, and experience, with demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture/phlebotomy on patients with difficult venous accessibility.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Must have access to reliable transportation, and be willing to travel off-site to conduct assessments, including to participants' homes and affiliated research and community centers.
