This position will be hired at the Staff Research Associate 1 or Staff Research Associate 2 level depending on the experience of the selected candidate.


Under the supervision of the PI, the Staff Research Associate will perform specialized experimental techniques in Molecular Biology, Cell Culture, and a variety of other general laboratory experiments. Duties will include handling and processing of laboratory specimens, using techniques including electrophoresis, Western blotting, DNA and RNA extraction, immunohistochemistry, and PCR, including those involved in cell culture, clonogenic assays, kinase assays and expression of green fluorescent protein constructs. Position is also responsible for data entry and analysis, and general lab duties as assigned. Operate and maintain laboratory and field instruments. Complete and maintain data properly, including lab notebooks, cell lines, and bacterial strains. Perform data calculations and analysis from experimental results using appropriate computer software. Order laboratory supplies and handle biohazardous materials. Inventory and dispose of biohazardous wastes.


  • Theoretical knowledge of a life science such as is typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field.

  • Effective and diplomatic oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a diverse group.

  • Ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Ability in following step wise experimental protocols. Skill to troubleshoot adaptations of experimental protocols.

  • Manual dexterity and legible handwriting. Ability to assist with general lab maintenance, including cleaning and restocking supplies in the lab.

  • Knowledge of biosafety techniques and practices. Experience to work with chemical and biological hazards and to recognize safety problems.

  • Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Willingness and ability to learn new software for analysis.


  • Experience in Dermatologic research.
  • Knowledge to read and use Material Safety Data Sheet's. Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements and the ability to write with correct syntax and grammar and to clearly communicate ideas and protocols in writing to EH&S. Experienced in working and maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Experience with DNA extraction from skin swabs.
  • Experience with electrophoresis, Western blotting, DNA and RNA extraction, immunohistochemistry, PCR, including those involved in cell culture, clonogenic assays, kinase assays, tape strip analysis, protein and protease assays and ELISA analysis.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment such as DNA and protein apparati.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.
