The Herzik Lab in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCSD utilizes cutting-edge cryogenic electron microscopy (cryoEM) and complementary biochemical and biophysical approaches to investigate the mechanisms of macromolecular transport within eukaryotic cells. Under the supervision of the principal investigator, the staff research associate will perform scientific experiments to uncover the functions of macromolecular protein complexes and their roles in the transport of various biological molecules into and within eukaryotic organelles. The incumbent will perform molecular, biological, structural, and cell biological techniques including mammalian cell culture, DNA cloning, DNA isolation, PCR, Western blotting, recombinant protein expression in bacteria, yeast, and/or mammalian cells, protein purification, and cryoEM.
Incumbent will also maintain lab equipment and supplies and perform other general lab duties. The incumbent will work both independently and as part of a team, establishing and maintaining good working relationships will all members of the research group, including members of the Herzik Lab, collaborators, and UCSD colleagues.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule to meet research deadlines
- Must be willing to and able to work safely with hazardous materials
- Must maintain critical documentation for laboratory operations and ordering of laboratory supplies
Experience with recombinant protein expression and purification techniques.
Experience in performing molecular cloning tasks.
Experience with sterile mammalian cell culture technique.
Theoretical knowledge of Biology, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, and Biochemistry or other related field generally acquired through a Bachelor’s Degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of Molecular Biology techniques, including DNA isolation and molecular cloning
Ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook. Good organizational skills including ability to jeep clear and accurate records.
Effective verbal and written communication skills. Good interpersonal communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
Knowledge of hazard communication and injury and illness Prevention Program. Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemical, use of protective items such as gloves and goggles, etc.
