DESCRIPTION
Under supervision, responsible for the safe operation of a bus designed to carry 14-65 passengers over streets and highways around UCSD campus, from UCSD campus to UCSD Medical Center, or to various destinations on UCSD business.
Conduct vehicle safety checks, perform general maintenance and cleaning. Maintain vehicle safety logs and passenger and maintenance statistics.
Participate in the Behind the Wheel Drivers Training Program to ensure staff competence.
Provide excellent customer service to a diverse population including students, staff, faculty and visitors.
Shift: Sunday-Saturday, variable hours 5 am to 12:30 am
Overtime and weekend work may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Willingness and ability to work with department staff and students to ensure that the department and University policies are complied with in a professional manner.
Ability to adhere to all California Vehicle Codes (CVC) as specified by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Maintain a valid California Class A or Class B Driver License with air-brake and unlimited passenger endorsements plus a current Medical Examiners Certificate.
Skill in driving vehicles on public highways and freeways. Knowledge of various safe driving techniques.
Ability to perform safety pre-trip procedures which include: checking motor oil levels, battery, radiator, water level, tire pressure, body damage and the brakes. Proven basic mechanical skills necessary to maintain vehicle for safety, and to report mechanical problems.
Knowledge of California state Commercial Driving procedures.
Knowledge of two-way radio procedures and FCC Codes.
Ability to work in a high-volume customer service environment.
Knowledge of San Diego area to facilitate Shuttle Lease activity.
Knowledge of vehicle insurance procedures.
Ability to maintain acceptable work habits, punctuality, regularity of attendance and ability to meet deadlines.
Skill to clearly communicate information to a diverse population and handle conflicts using tact and diplomacy.
Physical strength and mobility to carry mail and other items, change tires, and wash vehicle as necessary.
Ability to interact diplomatically with staff and the public in a high volume, continuous public-contact setting. Experience working with a diverse student and staff population in the fair and equitable assignment of driving shifts.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills to effectively serve a diverse population.
Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service.
Demonstrated skill in reading, writing, performing basic mathematical calculation and accurately recording information.
Ability to observe, listen and note issues related to driver/operator behavior and ability to identify, address and correct safety infractions and training needs. Experience performing and documenting field evaluations.
Strong customer service background and prior experience with operating a 14 to 36 passenger vehicle on all city streets and highways.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
DOJ/FBI background check and clearances required prior to employment.
DMV check and clearance required prior to employment.
Pre-employment drug and alcohol test and clearance required.
Must possess a valid Class "B" California driver license including unlimited passenger endorsement and "no-air brake restriction", and Medical Examiner’s Certification which validates the commercial license prior to employment.
Must maintain a Medical Examiner’s Certification which validates the commercial license.
May be required to wear uniform to facilitate ready visual identification by the public.
Incumbent will be subject to periodic DMV driver license checks and random drug and alcohol tests.
Subject to DMV Pull Notice Program.
May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $44,015 - $58,109 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $21.08 - $27.83
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
