This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at Towne Centre Drive and remote.
DESCRIPTION
UC San Diego Health is seeking a Senior Database Administrator who will be part of a team responsible for developing and implementing an enterprise database administration strategy that aligns enterprise information assets with business and technology strategy. This position will report to the Manager of Database Administration, and the candidate will part of a team of Database Administrators (DBAs) supporting these organizational objectives. The candidate will be the part of an on-call rotation for database administration issues and will proactively manage incidents and requests assigned to the DBA team.
The incumbent will be responsible for analyzing, designing, developing, and maintaining database various database and data warehouse environments including on-premise SQL Server, Cloud data warehouses (AWS/Azure/etc.), integration efforts with vendor partners (Epic Clarity and Caboodle) and more. The incumbent will use tools such as SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), stored procedures, and more to support database administration and integration both within the UCSD SQL environment and to external tools or platforms including Tableau, ServiceNow, and more.
Database Administration Requirements:
The Senior Database Administrator will function as part of a team of database administrators ensuring the availability, integrity, confidentiality, and performance of all UC San Diego Health database assets. Extensive SSIS, SQL Server, and database performance tuning and monitoring experience are required. Specific duties include assessing the current state and designing the future state of the enterprise database and data warehouse environments, database platforms (on premise and cloud), and infrastructure (physical and cloud). Supporting future roadmap design based on maturity assessments and pain points for capabilities around all three of these areas (data warehouse models, (on premise & cloud) database platforms, and (on premise & cloud) infrastructure) is key to success in this role.
Project Management Requirements:
The Senior Database Administrator will function as a technical project manager responsible for project plans as it relates to database requests in conjunction with the operational project managers to ensure accessibility, integrity, and availability of our database environment. Specific duties include but are not limited to developing and maintaining project plans, directing work to other team members, creating status reports, facilitating decisions, identifying and mitigating risks, collecting and interpreting data from various sources, presenting measure and program results to clinical and operations executives, and managing evolving technical requirements.
Product Management:
The Senior Database Administrator will function as a technical product manager responsible for developing and evangelizing the adoption and utilization of the data assets. The Senior Database Administrator will be responsible for managing and monitoring all servers hosting information assets (i.e. - CPU, memory, disks, networking, cluster configurations, mirroring, availability groups, and disaster recovery). Strong experience and background in both the logical and physical aspects of the database management is required to be successful in this role. Specific duties include but are not limited to supporting strategic planning sessions, product related research, validating product requirements and specifications, recommending development approaches and timelines, coordinating the integration of products into the larger enterprise product portfolio, assessing third party products/vendor solutions, communication plans, training plans, writing recommendations to senior leadership, and creating maintenance/upgrade plans.
Level 4:
Technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with clinical, financial, and technical leaders to plan, develop, implement, and analyze and design a highly performance and available database environment and approach to ensure an optimal and efficient access to data access and consumption of the data.
- As a technical leader and information resource, may provide support, troubleshooting, and problem solving at an advanced level, and may produce and deliver user training curricula.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training
Professional experience, and proven success, providing database administration and management in a large scale organization.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at all levels in the organization.
Ability to effectively communicate with all levels, including executive-level management, on a regular basis.
Experience in a healthcare environment
Advanced degree in healthcare information technology, computer science, statistics, or related area.
Experience with Epic Clarity and Caboodle.
Experience with financial, operational, HR, payroll and research data.
Ability to prepare models at varying levels of detail, such as broad conceptual and planning models as well as detailed logical designs or dimensional models using tools such as ERwin.
Expert skill in logical data design, data integration and the specification of data services.
Broad, working knowledge of MSSQL, Oracle, DB2, and other DB systems.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $78,900 - $179,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $37.79 - $86.16
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
