Under the supervision of the Facilities Director and the work direction of the Carpenter, the incumbent assists with the installation, maintenance and/or removal/relocation of the entire range of laboratory equipment required for the research performed by faculty and researchers. These duties are performed in any designated research support area and office spaces for researchers and lab staff. Duties include performing skilled and semi-skilled work, but are not limited to, minor plumbing- installing specialty gas lines and fixtures, fabrication of specialized cabinetry needed for equipment, Installation of specialized shelving systems, repairing drywall and assisting with the installation of new walls, paint prep and priming, cleaning and providing assistance in remodeling of spaces to accommodate specific research needs or equipment.
*Skill and ability to organize tasks, schedule time effectively, and set priorities.
*Ability to create fundamental drawings and sketches of planned projects.
*Ability to assess and solve problems related to the design, construction and repair of research spaces equipment.
*Ability to operate standard power tools including: drills, sanders, saws and other machine shop equipment.
*Ability to perform basic carpentry and woodworking using related tools and measuring devices.
*Demonstrated knowledge of installation and anchoring practices of various cabinets, shelving and gas cylinder restraint systems.
*Demonstrated knowledge of the fabrication and installation of seismic restraint systems for various pieces of laboratory equipment.
*Ability to perform minor plumbing and alterations using standard related tools and materials.
*Ability to perform interior painting jobs using standard related tools and materials.
*Demonstrated knowledge of proper drywall repair and installation and finishing techniques.
*Demonstrated knowledge of safe lab and fume hood cleaning practices and the ability to recognize hazardous conditions.
*Demonstrated knowledge of safety practices applicable to shops, construction, and a variety of research environments including magnetic NMR labs.
*Demonstrated knowledge of safe moving practices for the relocation of various laboratory equipment and apparatus'.
*Ability to recognize hazardous conditions while working in a laboratory environment.
*Willingness and ability to receive appropriate safety training in order to work in a variety of research environments. Willingness and ability to update safety education and/or certifications, via online training or classroom-based coursework, as required by the department.
*Demonstrated ability to use a computer running Windows OS and a variety of standard business software including email , browsers, word processing and spreadsheet. Willingness and ability to update and increase skills as needed to meet the goals of the unit and the division.
*Proven ability to effectively and accurately communicate with researchers, maintenance personnel, contractors and tradespersons.
*Ability to prepare and maintain, accurately and completely, a variety of drawings, forms, documents and files.
Must have a valid California driver's license.Must be able to lift over 50 lbs.Must be able to cover distances on foot to a variety of buildings/facilities, in widely separated areas of campus.Must be able to work on a ladder.Must be willing to work in areas which may contain radioactive or biohazardous materials.
Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $47,502 - $61,429 Annually
The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
