UC San Diego’s School of Social Sciences includes a diverse group of outstanding departments, programs, centers and research units engaged in increasing opportunities for interdisciplinary study and research.

Comprised of 11 academic departments and a wide range of interdisciplinary programs and research units, Social Sciences is the largest academic School at UCSD in terms of numbers of faculty and undergraduate students. More than 40 percent of all bachelor degrees awarded at UCSD are in the social sciences. Four of the top ten majors, Psychology, Economics, Communication, Political Science are Social Science disciplines. Social Sciences is home to nationally and internationally recognized faculty, including three Nobel Laureates and four MacArthur "genius" Grant recipients. Virtually all of the School's programs rank in the top 20 nationally and many rank in the top 10.

Social Sciences has over 260 full-time faculty; 750 graduate students; and approximately one third of the campus' undergraduate majors (10,000) with a total annual course enrollment exceeding 100,000 students. In addition, there are more than 300 staff and 240 student employees housed in 11 buildings across the main campus. IT support for the School is provided by the Social Sciences Computing Facility (SSCF), a consolidated group that offers a shared computing infrastructure and standard policies to all the departments.

Applies professional human resources, organization policies and procedures to provide guidance to supervisors and managers to resolve a variety of human resources issues of moderate scope and complexity. Provide financial and human resources administration in the Dean's Office, School of Social Sciences and the Social Sciences Computing Facility. Perform a variety of professional and administrative duties in support of the Dean's office. Using campus financial and HR tools, create, analyze and generate reports for Dean, Assistant Dean and School Business Officer (DBO). Prepare and review transactions. Advise the Assistant Dean and Business Officer of any new or revised HR policies, and the implications of such on the School. Analyze, research and provide advise with interpretation to management and staff in the School, when necessary on issues involving performance appraisals, director appointments and service credit.

Serve as primary contact for the School with regard to human resource administration: classifications; equity increases; recruitment; labor and employee relations. Provide short and long-term analysis, projections and solutions in financial, procedural, processes, and staffing areas for the School and Dean’s Office. Troubleshoot and resolve problems individually and for staff colleagues, faculty and students. Advise and consult with Social Sciences Computing Facility (SSCF) Director and manager regarding financial transactions for the facility. Responsible for special projects and reports for the Dean, Associate Deans, Assistant Dean, and Business Officer.

The incumbent makes a significant contribution to the School of Social Sciences' general objectives such as: program planning; financial and human resources management. Incumbent must possess initiative, good judgment, discretion, organization skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, tact and flexibility.

  • Knowledge of human resources policies and programs and how they affect other organizational policies and procedures. Knowledge of and experience with all aspects of human resource functions and various personnel programs, policies, and procedures including recruitment, classification, compensation, benefits, leaves, performance, etc. Proven ability to interpret policies to employees.

  • Demonstrated general HR knowledge regarding requirements for onboarding, including I-9 verification, and explanation of required payroll forms.

  • Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations; demonstrates organizational skills and problem-solving skills. Experience and skills to work independently, including exercising good judgment, initiative, organization, discretion, negotiation, decision-making skills, tact and flexibility. Ability to be proactive in terms of assessing situations and tasks and recommending or taking action to simplify processes and/or resolve problems.

  • Proficient in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and in writing and in integrating information in the completion of assignments. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to present ideas with tact, diplomacy, good judgment, and confidentiality to a broad spectrum, including high-level officers, faculty, staff and students within multiple departments in the division.

  • Ability to be assertive and communicate with senior managers and individuals in multiple departments, in a firm, but respectful manner, on a variety of sensitive issues.

  • Strong analytical and financial skills. Experience with and knowledge of finance, general accounting practices, business management, fund accounting, and audit trails. Familiarity with procedures in purchasing, reimbursements, operating ledgers, payroll and journal preparation. Strong mathematical skills to accurately run complex calculations for retroactive salary adjustments and financial corrections.

  • Demonstrated skills to assess needs by consulting with other campus departments. Proven ability to use creativity and organizational skills to develop, implement and provide leadership for school-wide staff training programs and advise staff employees on organizational values.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $48,900 - $102,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $23.42 - $48.99

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
