The Business Intelligence team is directing a BI Modernization program that includes the creation of new centralized data stores and rollout of an enterprise level BI tools. The program is engaging all VC areas in development of data models and BI reporting to address functional requirements. Join our team of experienced and innovative developers in creating strategic tools that will drive success for students, staff and faculty here at UC San Diego.Having significant experience, applies advanced data / information management concepts and campus / medical center / OP objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analyses of situations, information or data require an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Selects methods and techniques to obtain desired results. The position is also responsible for collecting customer BI requirements, developing related solutions, coordinating testing including user acceptance and overseeing related implementation.
This position is a blend of a Business Systems Analyst and Data Systems Analyst role, necessitating a high level of technical acumen. The successful candidate will be responsible for gathering and interpreting data requests pertaining to deliverables overseen by the Institutional Research (IR) team. To expedite high-priority deliverables, this role involves designing and creating customized data objects using advanced SQL skills.
A key aspect of the responsibilities includes designing and developing specialized data views, which involve a complex data processing system referred to as "Activity Hubs." These data views, along with the Final Curated Views (FCVs), aid in supporting the analytics and operations for the IR team and associated student data projects. It is essential to have a comprehensive grasp of business processes and data systems, in addition to robust technical skills in data manipulation and analysis.
Working closely with customers, the candidate will use an agile approach to facilitate efficient report development and verification. Direct interaction with customers allows the candidate to gain a better understanding of stakeholders' requirements and priorities, resulting in more accurate and prompt deliverables.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work directly with the Institutional Reporting (IR) group both as a liaison with the BIA team and to provide support for high priority requirements that require rapid delivery. This includes training IR staff on the use of Activity Hub views, creation of short term content to support immediate and urgent requirements, assisting in coordination of moving the short term built content into the Activity Hub views, and assisting in transitioning any reports built against the short term content over to the permanent Activity Hub views.
- Initiates and designs for diverse date and data systems. Initiates, designs and implements detailed interfaces between computer systems. Initiates, designs, executes and sustains metadata for collections of digital objects. Responsible for design and development of activity hub views that support campus analytics and integration across all enterprise data systems.
- Plans and conducts data analysis efforts for highly complex small and medium-sized projects that may include managing partnerships between multiple institutions. Establishes or maintains information documentation standards such as data naming standards and value domain descriptions. Schedules and conducts analysis sessions. Documents ownership, custody and access requirements for data subject areas. Responsible to A) Identify data sources B) Identify specific source objects C) Document data relationships required for sourcing and D) Coordinate data sourcing information with local SMEs. Initiates and designs for diverse data and data systems. Initiates, designs and implements detailed interfaces between computer systems. Initiates, designs, executes and sustains metadata for collections of digital objects.
- Coordinates reviews of data models and data definitions. Develops both conceptual and detailed data models for projects. Develops dimensional models for data subject areas. Creates and manages workflows (including ETL, data curation and others). Documents curated view design and stored procedure process flows. Creates detailed design documentation depicting data flow from ingestion through final curated view (FCV) including relevant metadata setup and materialization implementation strategy.
- Develops full data / information documentation for highly complex small and medium-size projects. Responsible for documenting requirements for new and enhancements for existing Activity Hub views. This process involves in depth review of disparate data sources containing all types of institutional information. Full review of each piece of data from a business perspective followed by the technical review and design. These systems range from all sizes of home grown applications to large, complex systems such as Oracle Financial Cloud (OFC) and UC Path.
- Provides escalation level support for Institutional Research users of the activity hubs. Responds to issues to assure data is available and understood by IR analysts. Reviews IR analyst input on a large variety of data sets and determines if there is additional knowledge / training that needs to be provided to the analyst or whether there is an actual issue with the data being delivered via the Activity Hub in question. Confirms any reported bugs and resolves. This work ranges across the full set of activity hubs and the hundreds of views delivered as part of this environment to analysts conduct any variation of analysis on the data provided. It includes a requirement for both technical knowledge of how the activity hubs are constructed as well as an understanding of each business use case.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Excellent SQL skills including development and performance tuning.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Experience procuring and validating technical design requirements from non-technical business staff.
- Experience developing dashboards in Tableau.
- Demonstrated advanced problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Ability to effectively prioritize and manage concurrent projects.
- Skilled at optimizing large complicated SQL statements
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with columnar, in memory databases.
- Experience with data models supporting self-service reporting.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $78,900 - $179,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $37.79 - $86.16
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
