DESCRIPTION

In 2019, businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford committed $100 million towards the creation of the T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion at UC San Diego. This gift establishes a virtual institute to study the neurobiological basis of empathy and compassion and implement training models for physician education (medical students through practicing physicians) to effectively teach the practice of compassion for self and others.

With the establishment of the Institute, investments will be made towards expanding subject matter expertise through key professorships, seed funding for research and collaborative projects, and appointment of research fellows and scholars. Additional activities include the establishment of an annual international conference, integration of new methods into the medical school curriculum, enhancing the Student- Run Free Clinic and establishment of various centers.

Uses professional concepts to apply organization policies and procedures to oversee a variety of ongoing administrative operational issues. Administers defined operational program. Analyzes and resolves operational problems of moderate scope.

Reporting to the Executive Officer of the Institute, incumbent will provide the project management leadership to the research project(s) within the Center for Research in Empathy and Compassion. Project areas include, but not limited to: Request for Research for General and Applied Research, Fellowship program, and Collaborative Research. Incumbent will have an in-depth understanding of the professional field; will independently perform the full range of responsibilities within the function; will possess broad job knowledge; and will analyze problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions as it relates to the Center.

Incumbent will provide short- and long-term resource review and analysis, projections and recommendations in all areas of the project, including sourcing and collecting information from a wide variety of internal and external sources, analyzing and summarizing reports and evaluating progress and recommending alternatives to meet program objectives.

Experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.

Administers finance, human resources, facilities and other operational activities for small to mid-sized academic or research program. Administers program components, and program's operational requirements. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums for research center. Works under direction of Center Director to establish center agenda, funding, objectives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training.

  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff verbally and in writing.

  • Working knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.

  • Experience and knowledge of protocol development and institutional review board (IRB) submission.

  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Ability to evaluate, organize, and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.

  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.

  • Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFIACTIONS

  • Knowledge of research procedures and protocols as well as National Institutes of Health (NIH) requirements as they relate to regulatory procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience coordinating a multi-center and cross-campus research projects.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
