This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite in La Jolla and remote.

Radiation Oncology currently is a large contributor to the organizational bottom line, being a premier provider of cancer treatment. This Department is distinct from other clinical departments in that all aspects of treatment are technology-based. Technology advancements will continue to create potential business and revenue growth opportunities for both the Department and Medical Center, in both research and the clinical arena. This also presents a significant amount of opportunity in the community, as well.

The Research Program Administrator/Director of Radiation Medicine & Applied Sciences, brings a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and independently oversees a rapidly growing research organization and represents the program/s to outside organizations under the general direction of the Chair, DBO and Faculty. Oversees all research administrative operations, finance, human resources and facilities for all programs. Designs and develops major program components and administers the full range of the program's operational requirements. Works with faculty on formulating short-term & long-term planning and procedures for each program. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Principal Investigators to establish program agenda, funding, objectives, and the development of relationships with and selection of potential project and/or program partners.

Provides leadership to RMAS by providing development, administration and strategic assessment of the research program/s in support of the department's mission and goals. Independently develop and/or oversee at the department level research proposals, awards, and/or transactions related to contract and grant management and maintains contract and grant department records in compliance with institutional research sponsor policies. Responsible for the allocation and oversight of research budget; support the development of grant proposals, industry and foundation contacts, and fundraising in support on ongoing projects and program expansion; lead donor stewardship and communicate on a regular basis about the vision and shaping of the department’s key programs.

Responsibilities include recruiting, hiring and managing research administrative assistants. Oversees the recruitment and supervision of talented students and staff, supports the development and execution of viable and sustainable program/s for students to engage in leadership challenge projects in cooperation with existing programs of RMAS and UCSD as a whole; external outreach to colleges and universities.

The Administrator/Director is expected to interface at a professional level, faculty and staff, and develop extensive and collaborative relationships with all appropriate leadership partners & centers. Maintains confidentiality of very sensitive information with others in the department. In collaboration with leadership, the Administrator/ Directors will help expand programs and acquire additional grant funding, along with philanthropic opportunities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training OR equivalent experience, education, and training.

  • Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices. Advanced knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes & protocols.

  • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.

  • Highly skilled fundraising experience. Advanced knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.

  • Experience in industry/university relations with a track record of successfully bringing university researchers and industry together to create new research partnerships and programs.

  • Knowledge of and experience with other research policies, including technology transfer, conflict of interest, conflict of commitment.

  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research. Demonstrated administrative experience in a science department or equivalent experience with proven ability to analyze, interpret and apply management principles, practices and techniques for a large, multi-discipline academic/research organization.

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results. Advanced interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.

  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers. Strong organization, negotiation, and decision making skills with expertise in clarifying and resolving conflict situations. Skill in working as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues, and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

  • Advanced knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.

  • Proven ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.

  • Advanced skills in short- and long-term strategic planning, analysis, problem-solving and customer service.

  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees.

  • Knowledge of and experience with human and animal subjects regulations.

  • Skill in analyzing large quantities of financial data, identifying needs, and making financial recommendations.

  • Experience in facilities management, space planning, and allocation in a University setting.

  • Experience supervising and motivating staff.
