DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 486+ full-time salaried faculty members and 100+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 600+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are 250 clinical faculty practicing at multiple sites and hospitals.

The Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health (ID+GPH) within the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego aims to eliminate the burdens of infectious diseases and health disparities by delivering outstanding patient care, conducting world-class multidisciplinary health research, directing the institutional response to antimicrobial resistance, preventable healthcare associated infections, and emerging pathogens, and offering leadership, consultation and training on global public health, gender equity, microbiology, and infectious diseases topics.

Under direct supervision, collects data and prepares ii for analysis. Obtains biological, demographic, and genomic data from UC San Diego studies and public health departments which we have partnered with. Integrates highly complex datasets from heterogeneous sources and maintains current database (e.g., Python, R, SAS, SPSS).. Documents all sources of data and types of processing conducted. Retrieves any required subjects and data from database, format, and prepare files for analysis.

Will be responsible for application of a broad range of statistical data analysis methods, including generalized linear and additive models, mixed effects models and other multivariate methods, network analysis techniques, Bayesian methods, power and sample size calculation

Under direct supervision, performs basic statistical and data analysis. Performs quality control of clinical, surveillance, and biological data (excel, SPSS, SAS, R). Performs statistical analyses of clinical, surveillance, and biological data (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R) to generate descriptive statistics. Performs epidemiological cluster analysis using genetic data. Creates and updates interactive plots on R shiny data dashboards to display data on trends of HIV metrics over time, cluster analysis, and other statistical analyses.

Under direct supervision, acquires skills and knowledge of professional concepts in research data analysis. Works on small projects or segments of projects with limited scope and complexity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.

  • Demonstrated experience with statistical programming and use of statistical computer packages, including SAS and R.

  • Demonstrated working experience with statistical methods and models incorporating a broad range of study designs and traditional and modern statistical approaches such as linear, logistic, Poisson, survival and longitudinal models, multiple testing adjustment methods, and machine learning techniques.

  • Theoretical knowledge of statistics, applied mathematics, or related field. Ability to read and understand the applied statistics literature. Experience to adapt existing methodology to new situations.

  • Experience providing written interpretation of statistical methods and results, in a manner suitable for publication. Excellent time management skills.

  • Working knowledge of research function.

  • Working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures.

  • Working skills in analysis and consultation.

  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability to read complex scientific literature, understand appropriate study design, formulate appropriate statistical hypotheses, and propose appropriate statistical methods.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point, and relational database concepts.

  • Demonstrated skill in prioritizing multiple responsibilities and tasks. Excellent organizational skills.

  • Familiarity with routine sample size and power calculation techniques.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with clinical trial protocols.

  • Graduation from college with a major in statistics or a related field and two years of professional statistical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Master's degree is preferred.
