DESCRIPTION

The Department of Political Science was founded in 1974 and currently has 38 ladder-rank and 11 adjunct faculty who represent a broad spectrum of backgrounds, methodologies, and approaches. A relatively young department, Political Science has skyrocketed to prominence among peer institutions in the United States. The most recent National Academy of Sciences study ranks UCSD among the top graduate programs in political science in the country. The doctoral program encompasses four broad sub-fields: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory. Each year, the Department of Political Science supports nearly 100 scheduled undergraduate courses, 40 graduate courses, 50+ summer session courses, over 12,000 undergraduate course enrollments, and 1400 undergraduate majors; The department receives an estimated 300 graduate program applications and attracts significant levels of extramural funding in support of research projects.

The Research Assistant would be located in the Department of Political Science at UC San Diego, working with Professor Margaret Roberts. The Research Assistant would help with a number of research projects related to digital politics and USA - China relations. Responsibilities may include collecting and cleaning datasets related to the project and conducting literature reviews on various topics, analyzing data, testing and design surveys. In addition, the incumbent would help communicate and coordinate meetings with other team members and participate in weekly team meetings with the professors and other staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated excellent research skills in order to decipher substantive and relevant content for research use.

  • Working knowledge of research study policies and procedures.

  • Theoretical and practical background knowledge in political science or economics, with coursework in quantitative social science, statistics, or computer programming.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to identify problems and develop innovative solutions and to compile, synthesize, and interpret data and results.

  • Advanced computer application skills: MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Photoshop or Indesign

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively.

  • Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments, maintain workflow, and work productively in meeting critical deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including tact and diplomacy and the ability to work with a diverse group of people.
