DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a skilled Research and Development Engineer 3.

The Martz Lab at Scripps Institution of Oceanography develops autonomous chemical sensors for seawater applications; in particular, autonomous instrumentation used in ocean observation systems. In addition to development of novel sensors, our work often involves construction of integrated sensor packages, built with existing, commercially available technologies. Our sensors are used for a variety of research applications in fields such as marine biogeochemistry, ecology, carbon cycle studies, ocean acidification, and ocean observation and monitoring.

The R&D Engineer 3 will be responsible for designing autonomous systems for operation in the ocean environment. Designing, constructing and operating autonomous platforms and sensors specific to ocean biogeochemistry (e.g. oxygen, pH, nitrate, bio-optical sensors). Processing sensor data at a foundational level. Provides direction and guidance to lower level R&D engineers. Provides full range of professional engineering services to research projects; meets with research staff in the design and development phase. Determines project specifications and parameters. Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarizes annual and semi-annual reports. May provide engineering information and advice to Principal Investigators and / or other faculty and research personnel with administrative responsibility for the research program or teaching facility.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced engineering professional in a specialized engineering field on a major training and / or research effort. Assignments typically require concentration in a field of application where subject matter knowledge relevant to research objectives and methodology is of great value in understanding and establishing engineering design criteria. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to lead the design, fabrication, and operation of calibration and test equipment for oceanographic biogeochemical sensors.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work.

  • Experience with designing autonomous systems for operation in the ocean environment. Specifically, experience designing, constructing and operating autonomous platforms and sensors specific to ocean biogeochemistry (e.g. oxygen, pH, nitrate, bio-optical sensors)

  • Experience processing sensor data at a foundational level (i.e. obtaining and applying calibration coefficients to raw data, quality controlling data as it comes back from the field in order to generate both real-time and delayed-mode datasets based on validation algorithms and field validation data).

  • Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.

  • Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.

  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.

  • Ability to lead and influence others.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Offer of employment is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.

  • Must be willing and able to travel.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
