DESCRIPTION

Under minimal supervision, the incumbent uses professional engineering concepts to assist the Integrated Electronics and Biointerfaces Laboratory (IEBL) members in the daily operation of the laboratory. S/he will be the primary contact with vendors to acquire and set up cleanroom equipment and assist in their qualification and calibration. Performs routine maintenance procedures for instrumentation for the fabrication of devices and electrophysiological arrays used in electronic and clinical translational efforts in the lab. Assists with maintaining all State, County and Campus required Safety procedures and practices. Prepares lab for all safety inspections.

Develops and proposes engineering plans and specifications for equipment and instruments with limited scope and complexity. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data that takes time to ascertain answers from variable data points.

Duties include ability to conduct routine maintenance and to coordinate routine repair which include contacting and scheduling outside vendors to service, of device fabrication equipment, site-preparation for new equipment, purchasing, receiving, storing, and distribution of cleanroom and laboratory supplies for students and researchers. Assist in the physical preparation of experiments for all research and teaching purposes in the IEBL laboratory rooms. Perform routine maintenance on the metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) system in Atkinson Hall. Organize experimental labs and maintain records of supplies and standard operation procedures. Maintain inter-office files and data related to the IEBL as required to maintain good manufacturing practice (GMP) and prepare for third party audits for implementing GMP. Assist with the maintenance of financial and administrative, computer based files and databases. Provide general office assistance to support operation of the IEBL.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Master's degree preferred.

  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.

  • Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.

  • Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to interact effectively with a large number of students, co-workers, researchers, faculty and external users using the laboratories and associated equipment.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.

  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field. Demonstrated skills and knowledge of semiconductor fabrication processes. Demonstrated skills and knowledge of chemistry and basic electronic skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to setup apparatus for classroom demonstration for lab experiments and analysis using standardized media, reagents and solutions from prepared formulas for use in research and/or teaching.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work and communicate with a wide variety of people; ability to communicate with a diverse group of people in a helpful, effective and informative manner, demonstrating tact and diplomacy; skill in expressing oneself verbally and in writing; knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation.

  • Skill in creating and maintaining computer databases for easy retrieval of information.

  • Demonstrated ability to train and supervise student workers. Ability to organize work schedules and procedures and to communicate effectively with a variety of personnel

  • Demonstrated computer skills using various applications, utilities and software such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, the Internet and Email.Experience creating graphs, charts, spreadsheets and related documents.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience to work safely with handling chemicals and hazardous materials.

  • Skill to prioritize and problem solve with meticulous attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard laboratory safety policies and procedures.

  • Ability to generate and maintain effective, clearly written Standard Operating Procedures for facility equipment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends to support tasks.
