Biomedical Informatics is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of biology, medicine, and quantitative sciences. Biomedical informatics researchers develop new methods to integrate and analyze vast amounts of data generated in the laboratory, clinical and translationalresearch, clinical encounters, and population studies. The goals of the Department of Biomedical Informatics are to (1) promote excellence in biomedical informatics research, (2) collaborate with biomedical researchers in developing new quantitative methods that enable the formulation and testing of original hypotheses, (3) train the next generation of biomedical informatics specialists, and (4) interface with engineering, mathematics, information and computer science communities, serving as a hub for quantitative scientists focused on biomedical research.

This department leads multiple federally and non-profit funded biomedical and public health informatics research projects, which are focused on the integration, analysis, and sharing of biomedical and health care data for the scientific community, as well as patient-centeredresearch. In addition, the department runs a complex computational infrastructure that allows access and analysis of these data in a privacy preserving manner.

Quality Assurance Analyst III performs quality assurance testing of complex public health informatics systems developed by the Department of Biomedical Informatics, UCSD School of Medicine. An example of one of these systems is the California Integrated Vital Records System (Cal-IVRS). Cal-IVRS is a platform designed, developed and implemented for the State of California through a contract with UC San Diego.

QA Analysts test code at the user level, both manually and with automated tools. Our QAAs use black box, gray box, and white box testing techniques; they understand software internals, debug problems using log files, and write automated tests and user-level test automation tools. As a QA Analyst on our team, you will work side by side with Software Development Engineers and Product Managers to develop features and evaluate technical implementation. You will also work with various stakeholders to understand customer usage models to develop your test plans and test suites that exercise real-world scenarios.

Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced QA professional with a full understanding of industry practices and location and departmental policies and procedures to test complex software changes or enhancements. Selects methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for testing and releasing software. Provides support to domain-specific release management resources in a timely and efficient manner.

The position is based in California within a 100-mile radius of Sacramento or San Diego.


  • Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training.

  • In-depth understanding of the use of automated testing tools, including skill to perform automated QA procedures. Toolset include: Jira, Confluence, Automated Regression Testing Software, Selenium.

  • In-depth understanding of the design, development and analysis of software. In-depth skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and analysis.

  • Creates and tracks the release improvement process to be applied across all IT domains and initiates new projects related to release management. Knowledge of CI/CD strategy, code repositories and code management, along with build pipelines

  • In-depth knowledge relating to the design, development and analysis of software.

  • Effective interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Understands compliance requirements for applicable industry or agency standards. Knowledge of the ISO standards and the Compatibility Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) model.

  • Thorough knowledge of other areas of IT. Knowledge of department processes and procedures.

  • In-depth skills in software testing.

  • Thorough understanding of and experience with the use of automated testing tools and ability to perform automated QA procedures.

  • Skills in software lifecycle management.


  • Knowledge of Human Subjects Research data security concepts and regulations. Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and procedures related to privacy preservation.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be willing and able to travel locally/regionally.
  • The position is based in California within a 100-mile radius of Sacramento or San Diego.
  • The candidate will be considered for a hybrid remote agreement with potential to be fully remote.
