DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the Lab Assistant will assist with a research project in which EEG responses are recorded while participants engage in a variety of cognitive and behavioral tasks. The Lab Assistant will assist with the collection of EEG data using the Bio Semi, Brain Products and Neuroscan recording systems, monitoring incoming data during data collection, and troubleshooting problems with equipment as they occur as well as will assist with the administration of a variety of cognitive assessments, including MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery. In addition, the Lab Assistant will assist with a research study using a neurophysiological biomarker index of auditory system neuroplasticity to see if it predicts or is correlated with response to Targeted Cognitive Training in patients with schizophrenia.

Tasks include the collection of EEG data, administration of cognitive assessments and assisting with monitoring subjects as they complete their Targeted Cognitive Training sessions. The Lab Assistant will work with both healthy volunteers and various patient populations such as those with Alzheimer’s Disease or schizophrenia. Additional tasks include assisting in data scoring and analysis including analysis of EEG data using MatLab, EEGLab and Brain Vision Analyzer, data entry, maintenance of the database and assorted research-related laboratory and administrative tasks as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Experience working with patients with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, preferably in an inpatient setting.

  • Experience collecting EEG data according to strictly standardized protocols using the Bio-Semi, Brain Products and Neuroscan EEG recording systems.

  • Proven experience in the administration of Targeted Cognitive Training (TCT) to patient populations.

  • Experience with EEG data analysis including MatLab, EEGLab and Brain Vision Analyzer as well as with data entry into spreadsheets (Excel) and relational databases (Access).

  • Experience and knowledge to administer cognitive assessments including the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery according to standard protocol including data scoring.

  • Proven ability to be well organized and adept at generating and keeping accurate records. Must be detail oriented.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to use tact and diplomacy with psychiatric patients, faculty and institutional staff, as well as when representing the agency in the community. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • User level (non-programming) experience with computers. Skill with personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, email software, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree completed in Psychology or a related field and familiarity with psychiatric disorders, symptoms, medications and medical terminology.
  • Up-to-date UCSD HRPP online training certificate (CITI).
