The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 486+ full-time salaried faculty members and 100+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 600+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are 250 clinical faculty practicing at multiple sites and hospitals.
The Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health (ID+GPH) within the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego aims to eliminate the burdens of infectious diseases and health disparities by delivering outstanding patient care, conducting world-class multidisciplinary health research, directing the institutional response to antimicrobial resistance, preventable healthcare associated infections, and emerging pathogens, and offering leadership, consultation and training on global public health, gender equity, microbiology, and infectious diseases topics.
Peer Navigator will provide support to women living with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) who are enrolled in a web-based intervention to improve adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among women living with HIV/AIDS. Peer Navigators are defined as "medication-adherent role models living with HIV who share the same experiences and community membership and who are trained to provide effective services that increase the linkage, retention, and medication adherence of the people they serve". Upon training, Peer Navigator will: 1) communicate and engage with assigned clients through the zoom video conference; 2) support clients by providing one-on-one peer education through weekly self-management skills-building sessions and peer support through check-ins, as needed; 3) co-facilitate psychoeducation weekly group sessions with a Licensed Clinical Therapist; and 4) electronically track activities and complete written documentation within a project database system to regularly report on work-related activities.
Peer Navigator is expected to serve as an empathic, trustworthy, knowledgeable, and reliable resource for the client’s HIV care. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: engaging in client outreach to contact clients who have missed weekly sessions, provide oral and written reports to the study team during regular team meetings; record and track client information securely and confidentially; and build and support clients’ skills in HIV systems navigation, patient-provider communication, and HIV treatment compliance. Other research related tasks to support the study will be required, as needed. Peer Navigator will work under the supervision of the Principal and Co-Investigators (PIs), Licensed Clinical Therapists, and collaboratively with study staff.
Uses professional community educational program concepts to deliver standardized educational and volunteer educational programs. Applies established procedures and programs to address county program educational needs that are limited in scope. Follows standard practices in analyzing program content and delivery needs and determining effectiveness of current programs. Receives detailed instructions on all assignments.
Must have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Graduation from high school or a GED and one (1) year of experience in a health or social service field; or an equivalent combination or education and experience.
One (1+) or more years (full-time equivalency) working with culturally diverse environment, including working with racial and ethnic minority women.
One (1+) or more years (full-time equivalency) of professional level experience providing technical assistance in-person, by phone, or computer.
Knowledge or experience in program content and objectives. Knowledge of how to deliver educational programs in a variety of settings. Experience (volunteer or paid) providing HIV peer navigation (linkage to care), or HIV care and/or prevention services at a community-based organization, HIV clinic, or health department.
Experience using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint. Experience with and ability to comfortably use a computer and technology (including the internet and mobile-phone applications.
Basic effective reading, verbal, written communications and presentation skills to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Written and spoken fluency in English. Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact tactfully with diverse populations by telephone, in writing and in person. Experience recruiting high-risk populations and street smarts to safely accomplish study objectives. Good in-person communication skills. Must be fluent in English.

Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $32,100 - $69,300 Annually
The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
