The Department of Medicine is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

The UCSD Division of Endocrinology within the department of Medicine, on the Inpatient Glycemic Control Team, is needing weekend coverage to help the MDs for the inpatient DM service.

Under the general supervision of the attending faculty physician, responsible for the provision of patient care for patients on the Endo Inpatient DM service. Provides advanced clinical assistance, support in managing insulin dosing in the inpatient setting, educate patients during their hospitalization, adjust outpatient DM medications upon transition out of the hospital, help arrange proper coverage for medications and supplies and serve as a resource for all hospital staff on the safe use of insulin in the hospital setting. Provides care using advanced practice skills in physical exam, diagnosis and treatment. Solves complex clinical problems and communicates directly with the attending physician via phone. Consultant and liaison for patients/families. Provide effective liaison with community physicians and referring for expeditious care of patients. Help maintain departmental database and QA. Serves as a leader to residents and technical resource to hospital and clinic staff. Works 100% autonomously on the weekends with attending available by phone.


  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Minimum six (6) months of work experience as a licensed Physician Assistant. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

  • Ability to effectively help participants change and maintain dietary and other lifestyle behaviors.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, procedures used in adult medicine including purpose, supplies and/or equipment needed, how to perform test, exam and/or procedure accurately, infection control mechanisms and recording in medical record.

  • Demonstrated excellent assessment skills and ability to make clinically sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience in group nutritional and diabetes counseling and education. Strong skills in assessing, designing, implementing, and evaluating the nutritional, lifestyle, and educational needs participants.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to interact positively and effectively with professional and nonprofessional staff, patients, study participants, families, and community support groups.

  • Proficient computer experience using Electronic Medical Records, databases, word processing and spreadsheet. Epic experience preferred.

  • Identifies patient/family problems or learning barriers including physical, cognitive, environmental, language/cultural, financial, psychosocial, and spiritual and provides appropriate referral as necessary to function as part of a team.

  • Ability to identify when a patient’s needs are outside the scope of your practice and expertise and arranges for additional services to meet needs.

  • Ability to work with adult patients of various ages and backgrounds (socioeconomic, cultural, cognitive, etc.).


  • Comfortable in a group teaching setting and willingness to do community outreach.

  • Three (3) years experience caring for patients with diabetes.

  • Inpatient experience.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.
  • Must be willing and able to work a variable schedule depending on clinical operations and needs and be willing to travel to off-site locations.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.

Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).

If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
