The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes the expansion of the student health and well-being center under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.
SHS provides oversight of primary urgent care, women’s health and specialty care for a student body of over 40,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students as well as supporting services including laboratory, pharmacy, imaging. SHS staff consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, Social workers, medical assistants, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistant, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS supports the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to continuous quality and safety improvement through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.
The SHS Nurse Practitioner Supervisor (NPS) will provide professional supervision of nurse practitioners; including the assigning and scheduling of NP staff, instructing and educating trainees and/or staff and assisting in public relations efforts. The NPS will supervise nurse practitioners in both the urgent care and clinic group settings. The NPS will be responsible for updating job descriptions and for the hiring and firing of supervised staff.
The SHS (NPS) is responsible for providing comprehensive primary health care services for acute & chronic illnesses and injuries and assessment of gynecological problems and family planning, primarily for adolescent and young adult patients in both primary care and urgent care setting. The NPS will perform minor surgery, patient examination, evaluation, treatment and follow up care for both acute and chronic illness. The NPS will order appropriate lab and radiological testing and interpret test results. The NPS will manage gynecological healthcare including assessment, treatment, screening and counseling for family planning. The NPS will assess and provide treatment and counseling for mental health disorders. The NPS will provide patient education and counseling regarding general health maintenance and preventive recommendations. The NPS will prescribe medication accurately and appropriately. The NPS will provide education and counseling regarding illness and health maintenance to patients.
The NPS will assist the Director of Medical Services in formulating NP policies, procedures and protocols and will be responsible for enforcing them. The NPS will also assist in the development of clinic policies and procedures. The NPS will participate in research and/or quality improvement studies including chairing one of the committees if designated. The NPS will participate in the Behavioral Health Oversight Team meetings and act as a clinical liaison and consultant for medical issues. The NPS will over see the travel study abroad programs and the self-directed STI testing program. The NPS will assist the Director of Medical Services with AAAHC accreditation. The NPS is required to complete compliance courses and programs that are mandated by UCSD and SHS policies.
California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, Furnishing License Certification, and DEA number.
Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) Specialty Certification from one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.
BLS/CPR certification at time of hire.
Experience and skill in conducting a health history. Strong knowledge of and skill in performing a physical examination. Knowledge of and skill in determining a medical/nursing assessment, including psycho/social aspects.
Skill screening patients and determining health care needs. Skill and knowledge to develop a plan of treatment and implementation. Skill in management of health-illness needs in gynecological care. Ability to distinguish between normal and abnormal patient assessment findings. Skill in interpretation of laboratory data. Skill in interviewing and counseling. Thorough knowledge of principles of infection control.
Comprehensive knowledge and skill in assessment and treatment of common gynecological problems, mental health disorders, well-woman health and family planning.
Experience and skill to routinely monitor production and quality of work being produced by staff and set performance standards, observing behavior, providing objective feedback, counseling, and implementing corrective action as needed to mediate disputes or otherwise help to resolve conflicts; and to provide effective leadership/coaching/mentoring.
Proven experience and skill to teach/train staff in all aspects of job duties/responsibilities.
Demonstrate experience working an outpatient medical settings, (preferably at a student health service) with adolescent and young adult patient’s.
Strong skill in interacting with a diversity of personalities in a professional, informative, diplomatic, and courteous manner. Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.
Skill in recording nursing/medical assessment findings accurately and completely. Experience with documentation utilizing an electronic medical record.
Skill in working with acute illnesses and injuries in the urgent care setting.
Solid knowledge of leadership and supervision of mid-level practitioners in assessing patient needs, establishing priority of actions, and providing full range of clinical care and services.
- Experience and demonstrated competence in travel medicine.
- Current ACLS certificate.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
- Must be able to work in various locations and hours, based on clinical and operational needs. Evening and weekend hours as scheduled.
- Must complete initial credential verification, & re-credentialing every 3rd year thereafter.
- Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.
