DESCRIPTION

Under direction, incumbent provides clinically expert triage service for the Hillcrest Subspecialty Surgery (HSS) inpatient service, including surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, breast surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. Participates in the care and assessment of inpatients on the service as well as consult patients. Communicates assessments to the attending and resident surgeons. Serves as liaison between patients, nursing staff, and physicians, assessing and determining the acuity of patient symptoms and communicating these to the physicians as appropriate. Assesses inpatients and emergency department patients to determine and expedite disposition. Assists physicians as required; conveys instructions and lab results to patients, providing health education as needed. Prioritizes and resolves patient issues, involving physicians as appropriate. Manages and documents all communications in the electronic medical record system. Plans, implements, and evaluates health care treatments for inpatients. Direct supervision will occur by assigned Attending Surgeons. The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient, from peri-operative care to discharge. This position requires excellent communication and time management skills.

Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the NPI or NPII level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

  • Current Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) Certification (AGACNP or ACNP).

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Minimum one year of recent work experience as inpatient RN or NP working with postoperative patients. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

  • Working knowledge of inpatient services with recent direct patient care experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill to perform basic surgical techniques, skill to provide wound cleansing/debriding and application of dressings, drain care and removal.

  • Ability to perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Experience in complete care of the surgical patient, from peri- to post-op settings.

  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

  • Ability to properly counsel patients and families, particularly in delicate or death and dying situations. Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel. Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Knowledge necessary for instructing housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel in all aspects of surgical care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical background in general surgery, oncology surgery or related fields.

  • ACLS certification.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.
  • Current University of California NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD
