DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Hematology Oncology physician, provides primary medical management for hematology/oncology patients. Demonstrates professional image and leadership core competencies. Acts as a liaison within the team to promote consistent medical management of the patients across the health care continuum by collaborating with the multidisciplinary care team. May perform procedures such as bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies and antineoplastic therapy ordering. Presents patient cases during team meetings. Provides patient/family and staff education. Supports the development and revision of divisional policies and procedures. Participates in and/or initiates research. Participates in community outreach and networking with community physicians and other health care professionals. Will provide care, including urgent symptom management, to hematology/oncology patients in the outpatient oncology and infusion center as part of Triage and Same Day Service Clinic. Demonstrates knowledge of solid cancers and hematological blood cancers, including knowledge of pathology of patient population, expected outcomes, normal and abnormal lab results. Demonstrates knowledge of administration of chemotherapy and other common cancer medications. Develops and expands the role responsibilities as patient and system needs change. Demonstrates a high level of professionalism and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Has the ability to function as part of an interdisciplinary team. Has the ability to understand the medical as well as psych-social needs of a patient population with cancer. Will work with and evaluate patients on clinical trials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

  • National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area.

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.

  • Minimum one (1) year of recent work experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner in oncology. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two (2) years gained through school or work experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform, teach and supervise others in lumbar puncture, bone marrow biopsy, intrathecal chemotherapy, and Ommaya reservoir access.

  • Demonstrated ability to act as primary resource for post-lumbar puncture complications and abnormal results.

  • Experience providing triage, interventions and evaluation to patients, including referral to appropriate department and services as needed.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing and be able to articulate complex ideas for all levels of audiences.

  • Be a self-starter who is accountable and requires minimal direction and supervision; a person who is open to new ideas; and a creative and flexible individual who is comfortable working in a large, complex organization.

  • Possess the personal characteristics of professionalism, credibility, commitment to high standards, innovation, discriminating judgment and accountability.

  • Demonstrated ability to take detailed medical history, perform physical examinations and evaluate pertinent health deficits.

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting diagnostic tests and providing appropriate follow up treatment.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with ability to motivate team members.

  • Demonstrated ability to exhibit willingness to develop and expand role responsibilities as patient and system needs change.

  • Ability to understand the medical as well as psych-social needs of a patient population with cancer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) or more years of recent work experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner in oncology.

  • National ONS Certification.

  • ACLS or UCSD ART certification.

  • Experience with evaluating patients on clinical trials.

  • Ambulatory cancer services experience in clinic or infusion.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.
  • Current University of California NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $149,229 - $208,842 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $71.47 - $100.02

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
