The Office of IRB Administration (OIA), a key element of UCSD's overall program of protections for human research subjects, is responsible for the implementation, management and oversight of the review of human subjects research and stem cell research conducted by UCSD investigators. The OIA supports seven research review committees: six federally mandated Institutional Review Boards (IRBs- 5 biomedical, 1 social & behavioral) and a Stem Cell Research Oversight (SCRO) Committee. The OIA also works with a range of external IRBs to facilitate review of human subjects research.

Under the direction of the Non-Committee Supervisor, the Support Analyst will provide analytical and administrative support in the the review of the Exempt and Expedite submissions, as well as renewals and minor amendments in a high-volume, detailed-oriented environment.

This position will involve technical and administrative support for reviews conducted under the non-committee review process. The Support Analyst will need to maintain a working knowledge of Institutional policies and procedures, federal regulations, and state or local laws pertaining to research. Conducts review of research protocols from all research areas, including the School of Medicine and general campus, in terms of research compliance. Expectation is that the Analyst will works independently in most cases without a great deal of supervision or oversight for routine or standard assignments. Serves as contact (email and ServiceNow) for faculty, staff, students, human subjects, and other individuals regarding the protection of human subjects in research compliance guided by federal, university, and other regulatory agencies regarding the research involving human subjects.


  • Six (6) years of combined related experience, education and training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of relevant Federal and State regulations, and policies.

  • Ability to solve problems, issues; listen, interpret and confirm understanding of others' communications; and be objective.

  • Effective, efficient and tactful oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a team oriented setting, to prioritize work, and to follow through on routine assignments with minimal direction.

  • Proficiency with computers, including the ability to operate personal computer software with sophisticated retrieval, storage, and merging capabilities.

  • Excellent customer service skills: pleasant demeanor, helpful attitude and patient.

  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to multi-task, and work with frequent interruptions.


  • Two (2+) or more years of experience in human subjects research.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Occasional attendance needed at IRB meeting which occur after normal working hours (currently scheduled on Thursdays from 5:00 to 8:00 pm).
  • Occasional travel (usually biannually).
