DESCRIPTION

Develops and deploys programs to improve medication use activities within UC San Diego Health. This pharmacist collects information and evaluates medication use patterns to identify opportunities to optimize medication use, minimize medication expenses, and identify opportunities to enhance outcomes through systematic medication use practices. A key member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, provides input to medical staff and pharmacy leaders. Collaborates with physicians, pharmacists and other personnel in establishing criteria for the safe, economical and appropriate use of medications.

The incumbent will assist with the development and implementation of policies, procedures, process guidelines, and protocols to ensure the provision of safe, effective and economical pharmacotherapy for all patients within the health system and to support compliance with clinical practice standards Joint Commission and applicable federal, state and local laws and regulatory standards. The incumbent will work with existing system-wide collaborative groups. The incumbent will be responsible for trending drug utilization using internal and external databases to identify opportunities for improving drug utilization and for tracking the impact of changes. Other responsibilities include the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives, identification and implementation of standard processes and tracking and reporting cost savings.

Develops Key Performance Indicators to trend medication use. Develop and report results of cost reduction targets related to medication use and take actions to ensure achievement of targets. This pharmacist also co-precepts residents through medication use projects, serves as Chair of the Pharmacy Department Research Council, and participates in P&T subcommittee activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered Pharmacist - issued by the state of California (RPH).

  • Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy and/or Board Certification in Specialty Practice.

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) or equivalent training.

  • Post graduate year 1 [PGY1] in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience.

  • Post graduate year 2 [PGY2] in area of specialty practice or equivalent experience in specialty area.

  • Seven (7+) or more years of relevant experience.

  • Experience and proven expertise of pharmaceutical theory in a specialty theory.

  • Knowledge of developments in research and design in area of specialization including new or reformulated products being developed by medical and pharmaceutical researchers.

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
