DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Marine Biology Research Division (MBRD) consists of research groups broadly in the fields of cell and developmental biology, ecology, evolutionary, and conservation biology, microbiology, and the physiology of marine organisms that encompasses more than 20 laboratories. Cell and Developmental Biology: biochemistry, functional genomics, ecotoxicology, and morphogenesis of marine invertebrates, including sea urchin, corals, and mollusks. Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology: phytoplankton ecology, coral reef ecology, evolution and development of marine invertebrates, conservation of marine organisms and habitats. Microbiology: diversity and distribution of marine viruses, bacteria, and phytoplankton, including symbiosis with marine animals, biogeochemistry, secondary metabolite production, and microbial adaptations to environmental extremes and other environmental stressors. Physiology: biomechanics and locomotion, sensory biology, bioluminescence, and biochemistry of marine animals, including host-symbiont relationships.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the Marine Ecology Assistant performs standard repetitive, technical laboratory and field experimental procedures requiring theoretical knowledge. Perform ecological research and analysis. Perform laboratory preparations of tissue samples for analyses of nutrients and other content. Assist in analysis of imagery data, and improving analyses as necessary. Keep written and digital records for each set of analyses. Perform fieldwork, prepare equipment for field surveys, and assist with the collection of data from field environments. Use general writing skills to document protocols for ecological analysis. Assist with ordering supplies, obtaining supplies at local stores, and performing general laboratory maintenance and record-keeping. Provide mentorship to lab volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in natural sciences (Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology, or comparable organismal discipline), or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • College-level knowledge of spatial ecology, tropical marine benthic ecology, marine taxonomy, and climate change.

  • Work experience in marine community ecology.

  • Experience in general lab protocols.

  • Experience in data collection including use of standard laboratory equipment and marine biological field equipment.

  • Theoretical knowledge of and experience in coral reef ecology.

  • Experience using image editing and analysis software including Photoshop, Illustrator, Viscore, and Taglab.

  • Experience using a personal computer (PC preferred) as well as spreadsheet and word processing software such as Word and Excel.

  • Experience handling large digital data assets, including proficiency with local and remote servers and metadata management.

  • Experience with scientific outreach, including curriculum development, public presentations, and scientific demonstrations.

  • Experience in ordering supplies. Knowledge of basic laboratory safety requirements and procedures, and ability to maintain up-to-date safety training certification.

  • Ability to accurately maintain lab records, both written and digital, with strict attention to detail.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be professional, hardworking, with a high level of organizational ability.

  • Skill, ability, and willingness to learn new laboratory techniques, use of lab equipment and computer hardware/software rapidly and as needed.

  • Ability to interact effectively, using tact and diplomacy, with diverse personalities including academics, staff, student employees, and outside vendors.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Valid driver's license preferred; this position may be subject to a DMV check for driving records.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
