This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at Greenwich Drive and remote.

The Manager, Operational Efficiency is responsible for identifying opportunities for organizational enhancement, driving process improvement opportunities, organizing and leading multidisciplinary teams including senior management personnel, establishing goals and objectives, leading execution of activities, and institutionalizing changes thereby evolving and improving the organization.

This position will lead projects and programs in the areas of:

  • Operational excellence and efficiency
  • Growth and productivity enhancement
  • Financial integrity and revenue cycle improvement
  • Establishing and reinforcing a culture of continuous improvement
  • Hospital network and affiliate development

This is a high-level project management position in an extremely demanding academic medical center environment that requires strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and a comprehensive understanding of all elements of health care delivery, including strategy, business planning, operations, electronic health record technologies, and financial considerations. The candidate requires excellent project management skills including organization of complex data sets, establishment of aggressive but realizable goals aligned with organizational strategic objectives, visionary leadership of diverse groups’ senior level individuals, maniacal attention to implementation detail, and the ultimate ability to institutionalize gains achieved into the ongoing fabric of the organization. This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assesses complex situations, identifies desired improvements, works with stakeholders to address issues, and implements solutions in alignment with strategic goals.
  • Leads large, enterprise-wide improvement efforts with significant financial targets within a highly matrixed organization.
  • Utilizes the People Process Technology (PPT) framework, combined with general knowledge of electronic health record (EHR) capabilities, to drive lasting harmonized change.
  • Creates, develops, and delivers change management strategy for complex projects; uses optimal methodology to identify resistance, performance gaps, and the development and implementation of corrective actions to close such gaps.
  • Develops and implements a lean management system and ensures that all elements such as standardized processes, problem solving and governance are in place to drive sustainable results.
  • Utilizes value stream mapping and various lean tools to select the right blend of kaizen events, projects and ‘just do it’s’ that drive business improvement.
  • Benchmarks internally and externally to identify and standardize best practices.
  • Exercises wide judgment in selecting and developing methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining appropriate results from organizational effectiveness issues.
  • Advises on the implications of the organization's plans and actions, makes recommendations on factors that may influence change adoption and sustainability.
  • Manages the relationships and interfaces with multiple departments by acting as a liaison with Senior Leadership and initiative champions.
  • Supports and builds a culture of process improvement and efficient use of resources at all levels of the health system.
  • Guides and advises less experienced organizational consultants.


  • Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training. Experience must include overseeing and managing the planning, design, and implementation of large-scale projects with significant financial targets and process improvement initiatives.

  • Thorough knowledge of the organizational development and effectiveness field, theories, models to assess, design and implement customized organizational interventions.

  • Demonstrates strong analytical, problem-solving, project planning and implementation skills.

  • Applies strong verbal, written communication and presentation skills.

  • Possesses strong consulting, relationship building, and strategic thinking skills.

  • Demonstrates skill consulting to managers and groups at all levels.

  • Ability to coach, facilitate and influence people at all levels.

  • Demonstrates ability to learn quickly, reason, synthesize and generalize based on information obtained. Sound judgment, ability to draw unbiased conclusions.

  • Ability to focus on priorities, strategies, and vision.

  • Knowledge of the consulting process to effectively lead engagements from inception to conclusion.

  • Ability to persuade through both logic and appeal to positive motivations.


  • Advanced degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience; MBA, MPH, MHA (preferred).

  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification.

  • Direct hospital experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as a leader in a collaborative environment, build consensus and promote the exchange of information amongst project team members, staff, and external units.

  • Knowledge and experience utilizing project management, change management, and process improvement methodologies in a complex environment.

  • Knowledge of accreditation standards and regulations related to health care.

  • Ability to initiate and manage projects effectively, using a positive, flexible, consultative, and supportive approach.

  • Ability to manage numerous diverse projects simultaneously through effective priority setting, efficient use of time, and organization.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral presentation at all levels with the skills to produce comprehensive reports, management information and insight and proposals that win key stakeholder buy-in and support.

  • Experience of strategy development and implementation, with evidence of continuing professional development.

  • A strong track record of delivering against demanding targets with evidence of success in an operational environment.

  • High degree of computer literacy and competence in use of Microsoft Office including the ability to build and develop persuasive advanced PowerPoint presentations.

  • Analysis of data and processes for opportunities for improvement.

  • Responsive, innovative and seek out opportunities to create value.

  • Objective, use sound judgment, evidence and knowledge to provide accurate, expert and professional advice when making decisions.

  • Highly motivated, numerate, logical thinker, with a passion for strategic thinking and applying quantitative rigor to unstructured problems in the context of business decision making.

  • Previous consulting experience, either as a 3rd party consultant or as an internal consultant within an organization

  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification (or equivalent).


  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must have access of reliable transportation and a valid CA driver's license to travel and transport materials to multiple work sites, including meetings and events on and off campus within southern California.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $78,900 - $179,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $37.79 - $86.16

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
