This position may work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at Lightwave Ave, Moores Cancer Center, and remotely.
DESCRIPTION
The Patient Access Manager, Medical Oncology is a key member of the Cancer Services Patient Access & Operations leadership team. This position is responsible for providing oversight to a large administrative team comprised of New Patient Access Coordinators and Administrative Assistants supporting Medical Oncology teams within Cancer Services. Under minimal supervision, the individual is responsible for managing access team members including supervisor(s) and lead(s).
The Patient Access Manager acts as a catalyst to ensure continuity and quality of service and care, promoting sound operational practices using a variety of communication strategies, process efficiencies, training programs, and data-based metrics. The Patient Access Manager is also responsible for developing and implementing access team standards, and for coordinating and directing the daily activities of the Medical Oncology patient access functions, which include but are not limited to new patient registration, insurance verification, and staffing coverage. The Patient Access Manager is expected to analyze and optimize all areas and entry points for new patient access, including ensuring new patient records, imaging and pathology are available prior to the new patient visit. The Patient Access Manager conducts all aspects of human resources oversight, staff recruitment, compensation review, mentoring of supervisors and leads, and labor relations issues.
In addition to the day-to-day management of these activities and team, the Patient Access Manager will propose, participate in, and drive performance improvement initiatives through consultation with Cancer Services leadership, Epic team, and faculty. This individual will develop and implement access, scheduling and call center processes to ensure exemplary patient and family member experiences within Cancer Services. The individual interacts, communicates, and builds relations with other internal and external customers. They will facilitate monthly staff meetings with focus on quality, education and patient experience. The position will also functions as a liaison between UC San Diego Health’s centralized Patient Access team and the authorization unit for Cancer Services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of nine (9+) or more years of relevant experience in a healthcare setting OR a bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration, or related area plus five (5) years of relevant experience in a healthcare setting.
Proven success in supervisory, organizational, and customer service skills to effectively supervise and prioritize the activities of subordinate staff, and to manage aspects of a medical practice including registration, scheduling, referral management, and authorization.
Exceptional ability to exceed customer expectations with a focus on issue resolution.
Excellent communication with the ability to explain concepts in a clear and articulate manner.
Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness.
Superior problem-solving and organizational skills. Focused with a sense of urgency.
General knowledge of federal, state, local, and applicable compliance regulations.
Proficiency with Epic.
Experience in a call center environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Supervisory office management experience within an academic medical center environment or outpatient oncology setting.
Comprehensive understanding of health insurance plans and the California payer environment, referral/request for service receipt and management, clinical triage processes, appointment scheduling, insurance eligibility, pre-certification procurement, and pre-registration activities.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $63,400 - $142,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $30.36 - $68.39
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
