The Moores Cancer Center Lead SPD Technician applies knowledge, skill, and experience in SPD and High-Level Disinfection (HLD) to support activities related to sterile processing and HLD within Moores Cancer Center. In collaboration with clinic leadership, the SPD Technician is responsible for ensuring sterile processing and HLD protocols are followed and provides input to management as needed. Assists leadership in the development and implementation of systems and process improvement. Ensures instrument and scope availability through workflow management and daily operations. Assesses problem areas related to accuracy and procedural deficiencies and develops remediation plans, in collaboration with leadership, faculty and staff. Acts as lead for Head and Neck Scope Techs and assists leadership in overseeing day-to-day staff duties. Instructs in new procedures, policies, and equipment. Provides training and acts as a technical resource to staff. Serves as a liaison for physician and patient care staff. Provides training related to the point of care removal of gross debris and safe transport. Participates in the hiring of new Head & Neck Scope Techs, and assists with staff performance evaluations. Provides backup to other unit personnel as needed. Ensures adherence to all national and UC San Diego Health policies and procedures related to sterile processing and high-level disinfection, as well as sterile instrument storage and management.
The key responsibilities of this supervisory position include:
* Oversees and ensures safe operation of HLD equipment, including ensuring scope availability based on clinic and patient needs.
* Monitoring, coaching, training for staff working with scopes, sterile instruments and/or HLD processing equipment.
* Inspecting equipment for damage and ensuring proper function through collaboration with Biomedical Engineering, vendors and leadership.
* Keeping accurate records of sterilization, HLD and supply inventory.
* Ensures safe and appropriate storage of sterile instruments, scopes and supplies.
* Transporting and delivering medical equipment and supplies to different departments.
* Participates in systemwide SPD and HLD workgroups to improve workflows and safety.
Four (4) years of relevant experience as an HLD or SPD technician.
Two (2) years of experience in an administrative supervisory/lead role.
Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.
Knowledge of computer programs to include Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.
Must have critical thinking skills and demonstrated ability to resolve issues in a timely manner.
Ability to follow protocols and standardized guidelines.
Ensures all workflows, policies, and procedures, and competencies comply with all regulatory and UCSD Health standards.
Ability to develop training/competencies, update as needed and implement across multiple departments.
- Bilingual - English/Spanish.
- Two (2) years of experience in an acute care facility.
- Certification in High-Level Disinfection and Scope Management and/or Sterile Processing
- Sterile Processing certification
- Medical terminology training or certificate.
Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
