DESCRIPTION

Within the UC San Diego Health cluster of Student Health and Wellbeing, the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) deliver campus-based mental health services to over 40,000 registered UCSD undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. CAPS multicultural, multidisciplinary, and student-centered staff strives to deliver community based, culturally proficient counseling services, outreach programming, consultation, research, and training opportunities.

CAPS services support the academic mission of the University aimed at student success and retention and works toward the maintenance of an inclusive and healthy living and learning environment for individuals to flourish as they pursue their academic and career goals. CAPS is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services and the Post-doctoral Program is APPIC affiliated. CAPS is fully committed to self-examination, peer review, and quality control through the utilization of data, outcome, and client experience measurements.

Under the general supervision of the CAPS Director or designee, the Clinical Social Worker performs specialized mental health social work to support students to enhance their educational experience and reduce the impact of mental conditions and personal distress on their wellbeing through appropriate assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and referrals to campus and community resources. The incumbent will triage, develop interventions, treatment plans, bridge care, monitor progress, and assure effective coordination of care between providers at CAPS, other campus resources, and mental health providers in the surrounding community.

The services include triage, crisis intervention and brief psychotherapy, as well as coordination of care and specialized case management for high-risk students discharged from the hospital. Treatment plans may result in off-campus referrals to intensive outpatient and inpatient programs and specialized and/or long term psychotherapy. When appropriate, the incumbent will also work with University Administrators, Student Affairs and Academic Departments for effective collaboration and timely coordination of care, including medical leave of absence and readmission.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree from an accredited school of social work. Possession of a clinical social worker license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners, and three (3) years of post-master's experience and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Proven ability to manage difficult and complex mental health cases with thorough understanding of the legal issues surrounding working with higher risk students.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills in general, and specific to mental health consultation work, are required including the ability to: develop strong working relationships; positively represent CAPS across diverse communities; and interact effectively with both health care professionals and non-professionals regarding mental health concerns.

  • Proven experience coordinating, implementing, and evaluating case management services for individuals with multiple personal and life problems.

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating care with community mental health resources.

  • Knowledge and experience providing culturally proficient, time-limited counseling and psychotherapy, evaluation, diagnosis, and crisis intervention.

  • Demonstrated experience and skill to effectively manage mental health emergencies and mitigate risk.

  • Proven ability to consolidate clinical information from a variety of sources into assessment and the treatment planning process, including the ability to plan and conduct treatment interventions.

  • Knowledge of various psychological theories, therapeutic interventions, pharmacology, and differential diagnoses using DSM-IV and ICD-10.

  • Knowledge of student development theories to explain college student behavior, including psychosocial theories, cognitive/structural theories, and ecological and integrative theories.

  • Proven ability and experience in utilizing word processing and electronic mental health records, accessing resources as needed for client care and own professional development.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Specific training and/or experience working with problems particularly prevalent in college-age population, and in interdisciplinary setting focusing on student wellness.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must successfully complete credential verification and background check in order to be granted practicing privileges; recredentialing every 3 years.
  • Various work locations, if needed and deemed necessary by the department.
  • This position may be subject to work remotely, providing telehealth services. Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.
  • Must have flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed, for outreach and emergencies.
