DESCRIPTION

The Division of Dysmorphology and Teratology is involved in four major areas: 1) providing clinical services to patients with birth defects and developmental disabilities, 2) providing public health services in counseling patients, providers and education to the public about prenatal exposures and exposures during breastfeeding and their impact on child development and health, 3) a teaching program that includes undergraduate students, graduate students in epidemiology, medical students, and post -doctoral students, pediatrics, epidemiology, health behavior, global health, pharmacy, and other specialties; and, 4) conducting clinical research.

The Center for Better Beginnings within the Division of Dysmorphology and Teratology in the Department of Pediatrics at UCSD conducts research studies to better understand the causes, prevention and treatment of birth defects and developmental disabilities. Research programs and projects within the Division involve federal, state and industry sponsored grants and contracts totaling over $40 million. These encompass national and international studies that require complex interrelated infrastructure and shared resources both within the Division and with collaborators and subcontractors outside the Division.

Under supervision of the Research Manager, the Lab Assistant is responsible for performing general lab tasks (ordering lab supplies, unpacking supplies, maintaining organization of supplies, supply inventory, keeping records), performing basic sample processing, including aliquoting and centrifuging, maintaining in-depth sample catalogs, and the shipping and handling of samples according to IATA guidelines.

The incumbent will work with a variety of biological samples including, but not limited to: human milk, infant and maternal stool, infant and maternal urine, infant and maternal blood, infant and maternal dried blood spot cards, infant and maternal saliva, infant and maternal skin swabs, environmental swabs, maternal hair, maternal nails, buccal swabs and others. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or a GED and one (1) year of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in biological sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • At least one (1) year experience with basic lab techniques including aliquoting, centrifuging, and the ability to keep clear and accurate records.

  • At least one (1) year experience with data entry.

  • Ability to read lab and study protocols and execute with supervision.

  • Strong ability to multi-task as dictated by the work load and lab demands, while keeping clear and accurate records to update and maintain study databases.

  • Thorough knowledge of (and high standards of) laboratory hygiene, biohazard handling, and universal precautions.

  • Ability to interact effectively with faculty, academics, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals and be able to present information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel with basic knowledge of statistics for report generation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor degree in biological sciences.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Will transport biological samples to various locations, including ACTRI.
