DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the incumbent will manage and organize a genetics and entomology laboratory. The candidate will participate in and support a large integrated research team focused on cutting edge research into the genetics of insects of medical, agricultural and research importance.

The incumbent will independently develop and conduct molecular biology procedures such as DNA isolation, recombination-based cDNA cloning, bacterial transformation and growth, PCR and Gibson assembly and the microinjection of fly or mosquito embryos. Additionally, will dissect insect tissues, collect and analyze data related to insect fitness, and conduct population cage studies. This individual will be the primary contact for research administrative and lab management functions and will perform lab functions such as ordering and receiving, maintaining lab protocols for biological and chemical safety, routine equipment maintenance, and additional responsibilities as assigned.

The incumbent will also be the lead for ensuring laboratory safety and will be designated as Area Safety Coordinator to work closely with various EH&S compliance officers in updating protocols, records and compliance, and preparing for safety inspections. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting with the care and maintenance of fly and mosquito mutant lines and independently setting up genetic crosses and other genetic experiments, among other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong theoretical knowledge of mosquito biology and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques, acquired through a Bachelor’s degree or higher in biology or related field; and/or equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

  • Proven laboratory experience and skill in mosquito biology, genetics and mosquito husbandry, including mosquito fitness metrics, tissue dissection, phenotype and genotype screening, sample preparation for genetic analysis, and population cage studies.

  • Ability to work with and around animals, human specimens, and potential pathogens

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.

  • Must be willing to work in an environment where hazards are present, including biological (including infectious agents and bloodborne pathogens), chemical hazards. Must be willing to work in an environment in which there may be exposure to animal allergens and willingness to perform mouse research.

  • Skill and knowledge to proactively maintain a clean, organized lab and stocks of essential supplies and media, purchase new equipment, and ensure lab equipment is operating effectively. Knowledge of general inventory and purchasing.

  • Experience using computer and data management skills and the ability to take mentorship and guidance in improving these skills. Experience with computer programs such as Excel, Word, and Power Point, Graphpad prism and other software

  • Experience with statistical analyses to evaluate research hypotheses and to manage data quality and integrity. Ability contribute to manuscript preparation and grant writing where it relates specifically to assigned project(s).

  • Effective communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact well with others to facilitate communication about lab requirements including the ability to discuss and understand day-to-day laboratory affairs, research plans, results and ideas with PI and other lab personnel in a constructive, professional and pleasant manner.

  • Experience in developing, organizing, and tracking projects and coordinating complex activities. Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail, and to take ownership of work performance, follow through on assignments, and anticipate, identify, and analyze situations and seek solutions.

  • Proven knowledge of MSDS's (Material Data Safety Sheets) and the hazard communication and Injury and Illness and Prevention Program (IIPP). Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing, safe handling of chemicals, and the use of protective items, with the ability to train and oversee others.

  • Skill to train others in various lab techniques and procedures (safety precautions, preparation of media, dishwashing, equipment usage. laboratory maintenance, etc.).

  • Skill, knowledge and experience in working with mice and comfortable with the use of mice as experimental animals.

  • Knowledge of laws and regulations that govern the housing and management of laboratory animals as applied to the University of California. Sensitivity to the needs of caged laboratory animals in compliance with AAALAC.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be willing to work in an environment where hazards are present, including biological (including infectious agents and bloodborne pathogens), chemical hazards and other hazardous materials.

  • Must be willing to work in an environment in which there may be exposure to animal allergens and willingness to perform mouse research.

  • Must also be willing and able to interact with the PI and other lab members within close proximity (less than 6 ft.) to receive training in lab specific practices, protocols, and research.

  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime (evening or weekend) based on needs of experiments.

  • Must have visual and manual dexterity for fine dissection of insects.

  • Background check required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,505 - $94,113 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.02 - $45.07

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
