DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences is composed of 65 faculty and clinical fellows. The department is composed of 6 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Hospitalist, Midwifery Program, and Urogynecologic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Under supervision, manage an OB/GYN and Reproductive Sciences laboratory. The candidate will participate in and support an integrated research team focused on cutting edge research into roles of reproductive tract bacteria in women’s health. This individual will be the primary contact for research administrative and lab management functions and will perform lab functions such as ordering and receiving, maintaining lab protocols for biological and chemical safety and animals, routine equipment maintenance, etc. Experience with mouse handling, basic routes of administration, colony management and genotyping is required. Expertise with timed mating, establishment/phenotyping of transgenic lines, histology, microbiology, molecular biology (bacterial genetics, qRT-PCR, plasmid construction etc), biochemistry (chromatography, enzyme assays, etc), or flow cytometry would also be a plus.

The successful candidate will have an increasing scope of independence to carry out preclinical research, including training other lab members in routine models used in the lab. Ensure laboratory safety, maintain laboratory inventory, perform general lab maintenance and order supplies. Designated as Area Safety Coordinator to work closely with various EH&S compliance officers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of microbiology, host-microbe interactions or related field as typically attained by at least a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working in an environment where research relates to basic biology, biochemistry, or human diseases

  • Ability to work with and around animals, human specimens, and potential pathogens.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.

  • Ability to follow and interpret research protocols. Acute attention to detail, resourceful, and capable of handling the changing needs of the research lab.

  • Demonstrated skills at problem solving, analytical and critical thinking, effective planning and organization, troubleshooting, and problem solving in bench work.

  • Experience using computer and data management skills and the ability to take mentorship and guidance in improving these skills. Experience with computer programs such as Excel, Word, and Power Point, Graphpad prism and other software.

  • Proven experience with statistical analyses to evaluate research hypotheses and to manage data quality and integrity. Ability contribute to manuscript preparation and grant writing where it relates specifically to your project(s).

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. Strong knowledge of (and cultivation of excellence in) conventions of academic style, English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Ability to pursue excellence in developing, organizing, and tracking projects and coordinating complex activities requiring a high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail, and to take ownership of work performance, follow through on assignments, and anticipate, identify, and analyze situations and seek solutions.

  • Ability to work successfully with a diverse group of people with varying perspectives and needs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong decision-making skills and ability to use independent judgment and discretion to quickly set priorities and establish new procedures when needed.
  • Ability to work under supervision and independently on projects with a variety of personalities.
  • Five (5+) or more years experience working in mouse models
  • Experience managing a mouse colony and knowledge of mouse reproductive functions
  • Five (5+) or more years experience with laboratory benchwork

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be willing to work in an environment where hazards are present, including biological (including infectious agents and bloodborne pathogens), chemical hazards.
  • Must be willing to work in an environment in which there may be exposure to animal allergens and willingness to perform mouse research.
  • Work occurs in an environment with scientific discussions of a sexual nature.
  • Must be willing to undergo DEA background check and perform record keeping and administration of controlled substances in animals as needed.
  • Must also be willing and able to interact with the PI and other lab members within close proximity (less than 6 ft) to receive training in lab specific practices, protocols, and research.
