This is a 100% Limited position for six (6) months with the possibility to extend or conversion to career status, depending on project needs and funding.
DESCRIPTION
Under close supervision, the incumbent will assist Principal Investigator (PI) and other senior researchers with various tasks in support of cell culture and animal research within a Cellular Neuroscience Laboratory with rodents as the model system. The position will involve preparing and maintaining cell cultures and culture lines by preparing and/or changing media, splitting cells, and plating cell lines and or neuronal tissue. This will require regular observation of culture health, careful documentation of passage number, vigilance in preventing contamination, adherence to strict SOPs, schedules, and protocols. In addition, this position will provide animal care and handling, acting with sensitivity and in compliance with AAALAC, University and Federal animal guidelines and procedures.
This position will also involve lab management, providing orientation for new students in the lab, serve as the lab safety coordinator, ordering supplies and other lab management duties. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience OR two (2) years of college including courses in the biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics or genetics and one (1) year of laboratory experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skilled in sterile techniques and preparing buffers, solutions and media.
Skill and ability to use standard lab equipment such as ultracentrifuge, microscope, balances, etc.
Familiar with federal guidelines for Good Laboratory Practices for humane use of animals. AAALAC or AALAS certifications desirable. Knowledge of research animal care protocols and procedures as defined by AAALAC and AALAS, and governmental agencies, and sensitivity to the humane care of animals in research.
Knowledge of specialized scientific terminology.
Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.
Effective oral and written communication skills. Good interpersonal communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds.
Ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook. Good organizational skills, including ability to keep clear and accurate records.
Ability to do standard and routine daily administrative and management tasks for research and upkeep of lab.
Ability to provide lab orientation for new students, flexible interaction with researchers, and cooperation in a dynamic group process.
Demonstrated skill using MAC or PC and associated software including Adobe Illustrator, MS Word, Excel and ability to learn any required software programs utilized in the lab.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Must be willing and able to work with rodents as the model system.
Must be available to work occasional nights or weekend hours as required for particular experiments.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $43,159 - $50,738 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $20.67 - $24.30
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
