The Lab Assistant 2 will acquire training and perform analyses for detecting and quantifying reactive oxygen species (ROS), including superoxide and hydrogen peroxide. They will apply these skills to analyze natural seawater samples and marine microbial cultures. They will learn to cultivate marine phytoplankton cultures, conduct experiments, and collect seawater samples from the Scripps Pier for ROS time series measurements.
Additional duties will include: utilization and maintenance of a FeLume flow injection analysis (FIA) system for ROS determination; maintaining complete and accurate records of data collected; assisting laboratory personnel with the preparation of specimens and other general laboratory tasks; assisting with general laboratory safety and organization of samples and equipment.
Bachelor's degree in physical sciences or equivalent.
Experience working in a scientific laboratory.
Familiarity with Windows operating system and general PC experience.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks meticulously.
Ability to interact, using tact and diplomacy, with diverse personalities including academic, staff, student employees and other institutions/organizations.
- Must be able to work occasional weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.
- Must be able to work in a very busy environment with changing priorities.
- Work schedule may change within the quarter (with an adequate notice) and from quarter to quarter.
- Willingness and ability to work with and dispose of chemicals and biohazardous wastes, including maintaining all required safety certifications.
- Must be able to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
