DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is a world leader in using, innovating and providing cyberinfrastructure to enable advances and new discovery in science and engineering. Focusing on data-oriented and computational science and engineering applications, SDSC serves as an international resource for data cyberinfrastructure through the provision of software, hardware and human resources in multi-disciplinary science and engineering, and serves as a leadership national cyberinfrastructure Center to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and broader community.

The Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) is an independent analysis and research group based at the University of California's San Diego Supercomputer Center. CAIDA investigates both practical and theoretical aspects of the Internet, with particular focus on topics that are macroscopic in nature and provide enhanced insight into the function of Internet infrastructure worldwide, improve the integrity of the field of Internet science as well as the integrity of operational Internet measurement and management, and inform science, technology, and communications public policies.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Lead System Administrator, this position provides systems administration support to the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA), a recognized Internet infrastructure research group based at UC San Diego's San Diego Supercomputer Center. Primary responsibilities of this position include technical support for CAIDA's Internet traffic measurements efforts, including UC San Diego network telescope darknet traffic capturing and two-way Internet traffic capturing on 100G link. Responsible for analyzing, specifying, designing, implementing, describing, and documenting customized operating system and application software solutions for CAIDA measurement infrastructure.

The Internet Traffic Systems Administrator will perform all aspects of computer systems, networking, security, and application programming to build and maintain the infrastructure needed to support the program and define processes to implement and maintain systems. S/he will provide technical recommendations related to computing hardware, network components (switches, routers, etc.), operating systems, and software architectures as well as work with complex, advanced systems and networks in a TCP/IP research environment and assist users on a wide range of technical challenges, including applying emerging broadband and multicast technologies.

The incumbent will be responsible for the performance by monitoring, maintaining, administering, developing, and testing computing, network, and application components related to large, complex computing platforms used for Internet measurement research. Additionally, perform for following tasks:

  • Balancing workload across multiple Cyberinfrastructure programs/projects,
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of a disaster recovery plan for systems as well as a data recovery plan in the event of a natural disaster, and
  • Providing support to the development of Hybrid computing infrastructure per the vision of the Principal Investigator of the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor's degree in computer science or related discipline with a minimum of five (5) years of Unix system administration experience in a medium-sized or larger production environment or an equivalent combination of experience/training.

  2. Strong knowledge and experience with Internet technology, protocols and standards, including: TCP/IP protocol stack, IPv4, IPv6, BGP, routing, DNS. Experience with switches, routers, load balancers, and firewalls.

  3. Demonstrated strong experience with setup, operation and maintenance of Unix operating systems (FreeBSD, Ubuntu) as well as design, configuration, and deployment of complex cloud computing environments (e.g., OpenStack, Kubernetes).

  4. Knowledge and experience in the installation, configuration, management, and maintenance of open source and commercial application and services software. Knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards. Demonstrated expertise in applying advanced computer technology as a problem-solving tool in data modeling, analysis, storage management, and other administrative functions and solutions. Experience with storage area network technologies (SAN), network attached storage (NAS), and network file systems (e.g. NFS, OpenStack Swift, Ceph, etc.).

  5. Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration. Solid experience in the development, modification, maintenance, and debugging of scripts and programs used in the automation of various system management tasks, including installation, configuration, and monitoring. In-depth experience in both the interactive and programmatic use of at least one Unix shell (e.g., sh, csh, bash, ksh, tcsh, zsh).

  6. Proven ability to understand, write, debug, and maintain functional and potentially complex scripts in typical administrative languages (e.g., shell, Perl, Python, PHP). Experience in the use of all commands and utilities commonly used in the course of Unix system administration. Experience in the application of common Unix file/data processing commands, e.g., sed, awk, grep, and related utilities.

  7. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner. Ability to interact and communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively with members of a diverse peer and user population in person, via email, over the phone, and in writing, including the ability to present technical information in a group setting to both technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to train users on complex technical topics. Experience in the use of a multi-project trouble ticket system to document customer interactions and problem resolutions.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Some travel (approximately 1 week / year) may be required.
